Nando's tells MultiChoice to take a hike

2012-06-25 08:30
Thinus Ferreira
Cape Town – Nando's has said it will definitely not be advertising on MultiChoice's DStv channels after the way in which the pay TV platform dealt with the fast food chain as an advertiser.

Nando's has taken its new "Diversity" anti-xenophobia advertisement to On Digital Media (ODM) who has been showing the TV commercial across several of TopTV's channels since Thursday.

A day later, on Friday, MultiChoice said it is lifting its self-imposed ban on the Nando's ad – but Nando's says it's not coming back.

Severely criticised

Three weeks ago the SABC decided not to broadcast the now infamous "Diversity" ad from Nando's which, according to the brand, speaks out against xenophobia and tells South Africans to celebrate diversity.

MultiChoice showed the ad for four days after which they suddenly followed the SABC and instituted a self-imposed ban on the commercial. then followed suit.

Civil society and public freedom of speech groups severely criticised MultiChoice, the SABC and and slammed South Africa's broadcasters for not wanting to show the ad which addresses, through the use of hyperbole and in a satirical manner, the vexing issue of intolerance towards non South Africans.

On Wednesday TopTV announced that Nando's approached them and that the Nando's commercial will be shown across multiple TV channels on TopTV from Thursday.

'There won't be a shortly'

On Friday MultiChoice announced that it's lifting its ban. DStv Media Sales, the commercial advertising sales arm of MultiChoice's DStv and M-Net said "it will reinstate the flighting of the commercial shortly".

Nando's is now saying there won't be a "shortly", since Nando's is not interested in DStv showing its ad anymore. Nando's says MultiChoice won't be getting further money for showing the ad since DStv is no longer being approached to show the TV commercial.

Nando's says it believes that MultiChoice only reversed course because TopTV agreed to start showing the advert from Thursday.

Since the ad was banned from South African television and went viral it has been watched on Youtube over 450 000 times.

    Little too late MultiChoice

      jaba.kov - 2012-06-25 09:51

Nando's food is OK, their adverts are better, and the way they tell dstv to shove it is the best. That advert is so clever and does not hurt any section of our society as it takes the kick out of us all... furthermore, what about freedom of expression? has DSTV, E-TV or SABC ever heard of this freedom? did they forget the reports of "democracy" they were airing in 1994?

      zaakiro - 2012-06-25 09:51

@StilleWaters Knowing Nandos an their brilliant marketing team, they use every opportunity to their advantage, an i bet this one is no different. DStv could regret their initial move....

      kevin.watson.7906 - 2012-06-25 10:06

StilleWaters, Nandos is a client of Multichoice. Any business that pisses of its clients will ultimately have difficulties. Why is Multichoice imposing censorship on their clients?

      wikus.terblanche.7 - 2012-06-25 10:14

Advertising is where all TV channels make their money to buy and air new show's, we bring a small amount to the table... Advertising is everything..

      hendrikvs - 2012-06-25 10:29

To be expected from the most autocratic group ever! They are such arrogant (*&$@%#* Nando's rock!

      phillip.beukes.5 - 2012-06-25 11:03

This is rather funny.. we all hate adds, and FF when they are shown... now all and sundry wants to crusify DSTV for not showing one, and then deciding to show it. Reality is that Nando's is getting some free publicity, but in the long run, they will need DSTV with its millions of people, to show their adds. Free publicity will only get you so far. Imagine the Olympics, with kazillions watching it, now Nando wants to show an add, and DSTV tells them to shove it... who will be laughing last....

      Charles-Bronson - 2012-06-25 11:49

Great Nando's, now make an ad how the chicken MultiChoice run back and how you give them the Peri-peri. Multichoice are a bunch of morons.

      steve.gibson.146612 - 2012-06-25 15:09

And the arrogant Multichoice continues to tell it's viewers what is good for them including continued repeats and keeping us in the dark with "no additional information" three days and even the same evening in its programme details!!!!!!!

      iYesssss - 2012-06-25 19:18

That's Nice! All 300 Top Tv viewers get to see something new...

      Passop - 2012-06-26 10:46

Well done Nandos! Stick it to em!!!

      selma.botha.9 - 2012-06-26 12:15

Nandos is not a shadow of what it used to be when it launched. If only the product was as good as their advertisements. As far as DSTV is concerned, I prefer to watch my favourite programmes on DSTV Demand sans advertising or start watching a programme 15 minutes after it had commenced and fast forward throught the advertisements. I shall gladly pay a higher subscription if they would cut out the advertisements which pop-up on the fringes of the screen during a rugby match. In the meantime I shall grill my own delicious and tender spatchcock chicken. Nandos suck.

      DraganTrenk - 2012-06-26 23:55

Wasn't advert per se,IMHO.It is a claim in the advert that Bushman is only one that can claim ownership of the land!It is against official ruling policy.

  • twentyfivemay.afrika - 2012-06-25 08:41

Its a freakin ad who cares, its not like viewers will dump dstv for top tv which doesn't have live sport

      pete.oosthuizen.7 - 2012-06-25 09:05

maybe so but that's not the point - have Nandos sales gone up?

      kevin.watson.7906 - 2012-06-25 10:07

      And when it does?

      Charles-Bronson - 2012-06-25 11:59

DSTV won't have the live sport for long!!!!

      sheda.habib - 2012-06-25 19:47

Any private enterprise (like Multichoice) that sticks its nose up government's backside deserves the brown nose that Nando's has given it. Makes one wonder how biased their so called Free Press News is.

      harold.parsons.37 - 2012-06-26 15:42

@ 25May.Dark continent So every time Nandos makes an ad and DSTV rejects it do you expect Nandos to walk away and try again. until dstv is happy or dstv recieves a call from its political masters to tell them to remove it. The question now is what else are dstv not allowing us to see?

      leon.coe.5 - 2012-06-27 14:58

25May I totally agree. who cares but sometimes it is a good laugh. as for their chicken. I stopped eating that C&$p about 15 years ago. so once again who cares...............

  • millionwatts1 - 2012-06-25 08:43

That advert has been showing on Comedy Central on DSTV. Top TV would rather have more subscribers than a Nando's advertisement. I mean who has top tv other than the Top TV staff and their closest friends?

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-06-25 09:51

250,000 other people across the country...

      millionwatts1 - 2012-06-25 10:06

That's a tiny number compared to DSTV's 1,5 million in South Africa alone and another 2 million across the continent. This move by Nando's is dumb!

      danny.vanvuuren - 2012-06-25 10:37

Don't forget DSTV also had only 250 000 subscribers once...a little competition will do that bunch of arrogant gits some good and give us more choice. Good for you lets see who else will follow and bring these thieves to the ground?

      millionwatts1 - 2012-06-25 10:57

I am all for competition if it benefits the consumers. But last time I heard Top TV was struggling and are quite boring. Nandos actually gets more mileage on News24. Whether by default or design I don't know.

      J.A.Rademan - 2012-06-26 13:08

DSTV is on the decline. Their product once was good, but recently I disconnected. After the umteenth time that they f'ed my pvr recording schedule. There is a live after dstv. With unlimited bandwidth going cheaply. Multichoice should be very scared. Top Tv might not have a lot of subscribers, but they have the right attitude. One Nando's ad got 450,000 hits on You Tube. That means the grape vine is working, and at this stage it is dishing DSTV and Multichoice.

      harold.parsons.37 - 2012-06-26 15:46

That proves that dstv does not need the money from Nandos because they are overcharging their viewers. But a nice nandos account will help Top Tv for the future

      leon.coe.5 - 2012-06-27 15:01

Good one millionwatts. you said it. what is Top TV????????

  • dean.nogood - 2012-06-25 08:45

Good for them, dstv has gotten way to expense to whach aswell, chow dstv

  • nicholas.graan - 2012-06-25 08:52

Good move. These 3 TV companies saw the manufactured "outrage" in reaction to the Spear painting and became spineless, instantly "forgetting" all the principles of freedom of expression that they are usually always banging on about.

  • BmanCav - 2012-06-25 09:07

Weldone Nando's......screw Multichoice...they can't get new programs or support SA companies. They don't deserve to get the money!

  • jacques.manus.9 - 2012-06-25 09:07

Clever move by Nandos. The debate around their decision will rage for long, lending them more coverage than flighting the ad on DSTV now would.

  • Ryno - 2012-06-25 09:08

so with the loss with nando's advertising - will our monthly dstv subs go up?

  • lionel.kritzinger - 2012-06-25 09:18

lol.. telling DStv to read between the lines..I like that

  • Hermann - 2012-06-25 09:19

Can't care less, I do not and have never supported Nando's as I do not indulge in mass production fast food.

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-06-25 09:53

Nando's is anything but mass production, moron.

      boltonbarry - 2012-06-25 10:08

Wesley how are they not mass producing food???

      jaba.kov - 2012-06-25 10:15

Your loss - out of the other fast foods its the finest and healthiest - not everyone has the luxury to eat lunch at home or at a restaurant.

      Glyn - 2012-06-26 11:47

@HermanH - petulant twit. Do you eat butter? Mass produced by huge dairies!! Do you eat fish? Mass produced by huge trawlers!! Do you eat cornflakes? Mass produced by huge multinationals!

      lorna.m.eaton - 2012-06-26 12:34

LOL! Nice flaming Glyn! You could work for the "flame-grilled" lot.

      J.A.Rademan - 2012-06-26 13:12

Anal comment Herman !! Who cares what you eat!!

  • warren.wilson.7393 - 2012-06-25 09:27

Go Nando's go - stick to your guns. your adverts are as good as your food.

      Gerald Jordaan - 2012-06-25 09:30

Warren..not used to much are you ?!

      boltonbarry - 2012-06-25 10:10

Gerald. Don't be afraid to go outside every now and then. You will be amazed at what you find

      lorna.m.eaton - 2012-06-26 12:37

So Gerald, you love diversity and the right of others to enjoy the things you don't hey?

  • mrp721 - 2012-06-25 09:30

Well gee, TopTV will show anything, they so desperate. I certainly wouldn't even consider subscribing to TopTV as they show old programs anyway and they so desperate they now want to introduce a porn channel, talk about desperate!!! As for Nando's & their ads, I say nothing... TopTV and Nando's deserve each other!!!!

      wesley.bischoff - 2012-06-25 09:55

Good, they don't need narrow-minded people like you subscribing to them anyway. Go live in a convent, coz that's the kinda of world you seem to want to live in.

      mrp721 - 2012-06-25 10:32

Well at least I won't be in hell when all is said & done... You obviously have zero morals or values, shame one can only feel sorry for people like you!!!!

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-25 13:01

Mrp721 and you deserve all the kiddie programs there are.

      lorna.m.eaton - 2012-06-26 12:44

Do I get you right @mrp721? You are saying you will be going to heaven! And Wesley has no morals or values BECAUSE he subscribes to TopTV (or perhaps watches porn) and likes Nando's? Oh MAN! That's a good one. (I'm sure your god will delighted to have his little helper right there at his right hand, giving all your advice and opinions. LOL!)

      J.A.Rademan - 2012-06-26 13:14

      DSTV Troll at large

  • bretton.eveleigh - 2012-06-25 09:33

  • david.robinson.7509836 - 2012-06-25 09:52

Multichoice are a bunch of racist bastards. According to their own ad, there are no white people in Africa

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-25 13:02

Yeah and the blacks all live in luxury.

  • Cassandra Eileen Olivier - 2012-06-25 09:52

DSTV deserves this if they want to be stupid and follow SABC's lead then they must suffer

  • julie.vanniekerk.3 - 2012-06-25 10:01

    Good, wonderful Nando's!!!!!!

  • Gary - 2012-06-25 10:01

Excellent!!! Just for that I'll have a Nando's lunch today!!It might give me some heartburn...but this 'repeat' I'll enjoy!!

  • boltonbarry - 2012-06-25 10:04

Whats wrong with that add ???

  • peter.jefferies.90 - 2012-06-25 10:09

Everyone is missing the point here, in Nando's taking a stand they have now gained 10 times more exposure!! Once again Nando's has done it!!! Just like they did with Santam ad! It is not about advertising on Dstv or Top TV. Their food might be way over priced but they really know how to market themselves!!

      selma.botha.9 - 2012-06-26 12:21

Yes, but their turnover does not increase.

  • somikazi.pita - 2012-06-25 10:17

How many people subscribe to TopTV? Two?

      Mike - 2012-06-26 08:41

      quarter of a million already

      philip.allebone - 2012-06-26 08:46

somikazi - top tv is actually pretty good, nearly everything on dstv is repeated fifty times and they have really cr@p signal and there are always problems, etc. etc. At least top tv is watchable and have variety.

      khanyib1 - 2012-06-27 08:16

      quarter of a million??? where?

      jack.sparrowhawk.79 - 2012-06-27 16:34

I'm with phillip here - TopTV is not as bad as you may think - it has some excellent shows and movies - The Walking Dead, Falling Skies, Hell On Wheels, Entourage, Greys Anatomy, Battlestar Galactica and Magnum PI, original Star Trek, Charlie's Angels, Million Dollar Man etc . I actually chose TopTV over DSTV Compact (the one to compare, not premium DSTV - TopTV has no comparable package). It is actually good value for money. The only thing against it is the lack of sports channels (which are tied up in exclusive contracts with DSTV).

  • Marianna - 2012-06-25 10:18

Stupid ad will never buy Nando's again!

      jaba.kov - 2012-06-25 10:34

plz explain what is 'stupid' about the advert? because i have just watched it again and i find it clever & amusing. I'm open minded - please explain to me if i have missed something.

      boltonbarry - 2012-06-25 12:48

O do please explain why that ad is stupid. I love how people make these comments but rarely explain why

      jacqui.daanevanrensburg - 2012-06-25 13:03

Marianna, stupid? Stupid is as stupid does.

      nangamso.mbambo - 2012-06-25 14:25

I'd say stupid is not getting the logic behind it

      lorna.m.eaton - 2012-06-26 12:46

      Didn't you understand it Marianna?

      J.A.Rademan - 2012-06-26 13:21

Marianna, what everybody is reading is that YOU are stupid, by the way nobody cares if you buy anything.

      pisciotta - 2012-07-01 13:40

Marianna - Tell your parents to take away your computer. You are too immature to watch such great art with adult appreciation. If you purched your PC yourself, send it back with a note "over my head"

  • theuns.kruger - 2012-06-25 11:07

Good on you, Nando's. Don't pander and don't compromise. Love your work (almost as much as your lemon and herb chicken strips on rice!)

  • phiwo.gasa - 2012-06-25 11:23

Just watched the ad. Maybe im stupid... Whats the fuss about?

  • nancy.cloete - 2012-06-25 11:36

way to go Nando's ..... if your money is not good enough for dstv ... give it to someone else! It is not even about Nando's or about DSTV .. it is about the total lack of humour and the stand that people take on matters which are so damn irrelevant in the BIG PICTURE .... why ar'nt these BIG CORPORATES doing more about CRIME and POVERTY in our country!

  • - 2012-06-25 12:18

The mere fact that everyone is debating this so vigorously is proof enough that the Nandos add campaign is working wonders. When last did a advert cause this much debate. We are all actually part of their campaign. Brilliant Nandos !!!!!

  • comurray - 2012-06-25 12:20

NANDOS, a great decision to keep your ad's away from the Multichoice dictatorship. Prior to this is you have the best coverage for free.

  • Richard - 2012-06-25 12:21

Geez, I think its awesome. No all we need to do is tell them to stick their constant re-runs of re-runs as well.

      boltonbarry - 2012-06-25 12:52

Yes please and sell us un-bundled programs. I get all of my entertainment from the internet. It's not the same quality of course but If I want to look at a good quality movie I go to the local DVD store and rent one or I buy a movie from apple iStore.

Multichoice?????????? MULTI and CHOICE? two words those @#$^# should not be using. No choice was given its viewers to turn off, or watch the ad. has anyone else noticed the inordinate amount of attention that info supply has? there are a thousand bodies and organisations who like to decide what we can and can't eat, drink, watch, think, say, paint and "cartoon-erise"? WTF and who TF do these people think we are? Too many small numbers of officers/presidents/leaders/chairs decide on too much of what we want and dont want. where did our freedoms go? Oh, and F you, multichoice

  • nangamso.mbambo - 2012-06-25 14:28

  • vicky.vangemert - 2012-06-25 15:37

BLame the Spear debacle/ circus! SABC, DTSV, eTV all crapped their undies and thought they'd be pro-active and anticipate people's "outrage" and "offence taken" . BUnch of suck-ups. Look teacher, I didn't do what they did!!! and the teacher was never even in the room….

Well done to Nando's.Screw the ignorant idiots with their own brand of freedom of speech.Nando's got more out of this than they probably expected.DSTV can justify foul language, nudity and most off all the misuse of God's name in each and everything they show but they have an issue with this ad.Two faced idiot's.

  • margo.schopf - 2012-06-25 16:56

I'm a vegetarian, so don't use Nando's, but their ads are always brilliant and good for a giggle. Bravo! This one is brilliant. Makes you think... As for Multichoice, they have descended into total banality serving up total c--p. Such a rip-off.

  • Ally - 2012-06-25 17:41

The next ad will probably be Nando's "eliminating" the TV stations one by one and TopTV walking away with a big sack of Nando's ad spend. Way to go, Nando's!

  • allison.steedman - 2012-06-25 18:22

I wonder how long the ban will stay in effect. Top TV have fewer than 300 000 subscribers compared to the millions of multichoice viewers. I would think it would be unwise to permanently boycot advertising through multichoice. Sort of cutting off your beak to spite your face I guess.

      khanyib1 - 2012-06-27 08:21

very true. unless nandos has plan 'C' just for that:) can't deny the publicy they are getting out of the debate. but ads tend to have a very short lifespan...

  • iYesssss - 2012-06-25 19:13
