No live broadcast for Saftas

Cape Town – The Saftas will not be broadcast live this year.

The ceremony, which is taking place over two consecutive Sundays in February, will not be televised as the awards show failed to secure a broadcaster.

"We will unfortunately not be broadcasting the Saftas,'' said Zandile Nkonyeni, SABC2's publicity manager.

As for a later screening, Nkonyeni only said "SABC2 is not having the Saftas as a live broadcast. Whether we'll be licensing it for later broadcast possibly is not confirmed. We will however be supporting our nominees through on-air marketing campaigns on all the SABC's TV channels from SABC1 to SABC3. ''

Nkonyeni explained the broadcaster's decision. "We could not actually pick up the Saftas due to financial constraints.''

The National Film and Video Foundation (NFVF), the organisation hosting the Saftas, had the opportunity to approach other broadcasters, but evidently did so too late in order for the event to be broadcast live.

IOL reports that Azania Muendane, the NFVF's head of marketing and public affairs, said the lack of a broadcaster would not put a dampener on the Saftas, and the NFVF are comfortable that the focus is now on the ceremony instead of the television production.

The ceremony, which will be held at Madame Zingara's Theatre of Dreams at Melrose Arch in Johannesburg on 20 and 27 February, will still be recorded by Clive Morris Productions.
