Our top 3 performances on Idols last night

Cape Town – With audition rounds over, the competition officially started last night when the Idols SA top 8 guys took to the stage for the first ever live performance.

The live spectaculars for Idols SA season 11 kicked off on a high note at Pretoria’s State Theatre with a spirited group performance by this season’s top 8 guys of Mark Ronson’s and Bruno Mars’s smash hit, Uptown Funk.

For their performances the guys chose songs that have all charted on Channel O, making them some of the most popular tracks in South Africa.

The guys had mixed reviews from the judges and fans on social media.

Here are our top 3 performances of the evening:

Karabo Mogane, previously known as 'the one with the dishwashing personality', suprised everyone when he came out guns blazing singing Sam Smith's, Not The Only One. He got a standing ovation from Somizi and an all round thumbs up from the other judges.

Rhema Varrie continued his reputation as a consistent performer. Taking on the Ed Sheeran favourite, Thinking Out Loud, he is definitely a top contender. The judges were impressed with his singing but wants him to add more personality. We say, do you boo!

16-year-old Loyiso Gijana proved that age ain’t nothing but a number. In a bold move accompanied only by a piano he performed a ‘technical tour de force’ of Sam Smith’s Lay Me Down. Just like Somizi, we were speaking in tongues!

Voting for the top 8 guys opened at the start of the live Spectacular show and closes on Tuesday night, 1 September, at 22:00.

The top 8 girls have a tough act to follow when they take to the stage on Sunday, 6 September at 17:00 on M -Net, channel 101 on DStv, and Mzansi Magic, channel 161 on DStv.
