Riaan Cruywagen retiring after 37 years

2012-11-02 08:37
Cape Town – After 37 years in the business, veteran Afrikaans newsreader Riaan Cruywagen is retiring, reports Beeld.

Acting head of news and actuality at the SABC, Jimi Matthews, confirmed on Thursday that Cruywagen will be leaving the broadcasting corporation in November.

Matthews told Beeld that on 26 November it will be exactly 37 years since Cruywagen started working at the SABC. "He is 67. He's retiring," Matthews added.

Cruywagen believes he's already seven years over his retiring age and revealed that he's done over 7 000 television broadcasts.

"This means that I couldn't spend time with my family for at least 7 000 evenings, so I must say I'm looking forward to the evenings at home."

Cruywagen last took a "proper" holiday in 2006 and after that a long weekend here and there, but said that "it's not really enough time to rest and switch off.

"That's how it goes when the news is your food, but it's going to be nice to quietly read the newspapers and magazines during the day and to rather read a book than a newspaper."

Cruywagen is also known for being the voice on then popular children's programme Haas Das se Nuuskas.

*Pay tribute to Riaan by sending a message of congratulations and farewell to tv@channel24.co.za , and get published!

  • mpumelelo.matross - 2012-11-02 10:49

Best part about this man is, he hasn't aged at all after 37 years on TV. He's taken a lot of slack for his toupe and he's been an absolute sport about it. He should have been the CEO of the SABC...but that's politics and we'll leave it right there. Kudos Mr Cruywagen!!!!!! You've done well.

Riaan Cruywagen is fluent in twenty seven of the eleven official languages. Riaan Cruywagen knows the news before it happens. Riaan Cruywagen knew you would say that.

      willem.murray.1 - 2012-11-02 11:11

One night during an ad break on the 8 o'clock news, Riaan Cruywagen mentioned to the makeup lady that he was 'tired of this apartheid nonsense'. Nelson Mandela was released from prison the next day.

      willem.murray.1 - 2012-11-02 11:20

Riaan Cruywagen is an accomplished author and poet - though, humble by nature, he chooses not to write under his own title but prefers to go by psuedonyms such as W. Whitman, E . Hemingway, Proust, JD Salinger and G Chaucer - amongst others.

      hugo.mcdonald.7 - 2012-11-02 15:41

  • Jeremy - 2012-11-02 12:02

I had the good fortune, in my years at SABC TV News, to work with some true legends - Riaan was one and, let me tell you, he's as nice a guy in person as he appears on the screen. Others included Michael de Morgan (sadly departed), Adrian Steed, Shirley Veal and Ellen Erasmus. Lovely people all and thoroughly professional!

      sabiha.lockhat - 2012-11-02 12:34

aah jeremy spot on -thoroughly professional , brings back memories , such pleasant ppl adrian steed , ellen erasmus. As for Riaan you still will belong to the family of Sabc 2 and the country. You will be missed Thank u for your service, maybe Sabc should sponsor a fully paid well deserved holiday.

Fondly remembered. Will never forget the way he could not stop laughing as the sleeping cat in the television clip slipped down the screen. Great guy.

  • msika.gama.5 - 2012-11-02 13:25

It is about time he give others a chance...Enjoy your retirement Meneer.

  • cathy.g.ingram - 2012-11-02 13:38

In the early days of TV when Riaan and others read the news, I thought they had phenomenal memories, to be able to "say" the news without ever looking at a script LOL. Then I discovered there was a machine called teleprompt (I think). But I loved Riaan, reading the news, as well as Haas Das. Enjoy your retirement Riaan, you deserve it.

  • leslie.rabie - 2012-11-02 13:49

Tatta Oom, Jy het dalk 7000 aande verloor met jou familie spandeer maar het met ander duisende familie deel van hulle familie geword. Ons sal jou mis..

Agreed 100%! Many blessings to you Mr Cruywagen. I too grew up watching you on the news and must say you haven't aged at all in 37 years. I remember being a very young girl and hearing that you were batting with cancer and thinking to myself, shame that's the disease that kills people. Yet here you are today, retiring nogal! Have a wonderful rest and enjoy the quiet years, you've certainly earned them. God Bless you.

  • tiaan.vanderberg.75 - 2012-11-02 15:39

What I will miss the most about Riaan, besides the Haas Das voice and the perfect Afrikaans, is his cheeky wink at the end of every newscast. Hou die bokant blink, Riaan ;-)

      steve.werner.334 - 2012-11-02 22:24

Nee Twolips soos Riaan dit sal stel "Ondersteun die gepolitoerde kant opwaarts"

Wow, sad day indeed. I grew up with Riaan, Haas Das and Liewe Heksie. We got our TV in 1976 so it's almost as bad as losing a family member. Have a blessed retirement Riaan, perhaps just to keep your fans happy you'll read the news once a year? Just saying ;)
