Cape Town – South African viewers will be able to see Oprah Winfrey's highly-anticipated interview with disgraced cyclist Lance Armstrong on Friday 18 January on TLC on MultiChoice's DStv platform on channel 172 and ODM's TopTV on channel 453 at 19:30.
The fallen cyclist, in his first interview since he was stripped of numerous titles due to charges of years of using performance-enhancing drugs, is widely expected to reveal to Winfrey that he indeed cheated.
The Armstrong interview, as part of Winfrey's highly-rated new weekly talk show, Oprah's Next Chapter, will also be streamed online at oprah.com worldwide at the same time on 17 January when the episode is shown in America.
South African viewers who want to watch it online will be able to log on at 04:00 on the morning of 18 January, South African time, to watch it.
Huge TV ratings expected
Although no South African broadcasters have secured Oprah's Next Chapter as a series and no third-party channels on either DStv on TopTV have the show, Discovery Networks International scrambled to pick up the Armstrong episode for television, which will in all likelihood make for huge TV ratings.
In December Discovery showed another episode, Winfrey's interview with popstar Justin Bieber on TLC on DStv and TopTV in South Africa as well, also a day after it aired in the United States.
OWN is a joint venture between Winfrey's Harpo and Discovery, which has helped the factual entertainment global giant to secure the big-buzz episodes.
Although the OWN network is so far only available in America and Canada, Discovery Networks will show the Armstrong interview worldwide on TLC from 18 January.
Winfrey's interview with Armstrong is being recorded on Monday.
First interview
Lance Armstrong has not given any interviews since he was banned for life from cycling, unable to compete in events sanctioned by the US Anti-Doping Agency and the World Anti-Doping Agency, including triathlons.
On 4 January The New York Times, citing anonymous sources, reported that Armstrong was apparently looking to make some kind of confession or admission, although his representatives said they're not aware of anything.
That admission could now possibly come during the upcoming interview with Winfrey in which he will break his silence about the scandal.
Winfrey will be speaking with Armstrong at his home in Austin, Texas in the only interview since the seven-time Tour de France winner was stripped of his titles and dropped from millions of dollars in endorsement deals.
