SABC dumps Afrikaans TV news

2014-06-25 15:18
Thinus Ferreira
Cape Town – South African TV viewers are fuming because they can't find the Afrikaans TV news bulletin on SABC television – and they can’t because it doesn't exist.

The SABC and SABC News entirely dumped the Nuus from its schedule for this week.

The SABC moved the daily Afrikaans Nuus om 7 bulletin from SABC2 where it’s usually broadcast to SABC3 at 19:30 for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

But now the Afrikaans news bulletin has disappeared because SABC3 also doesn't have space for it and the SABC apparently doesn't care enough to show that news bulletin to that language group this week.

Meanwhile viewers are desperately trying to find where the bulletin went since the beginning of the 2014 FIFA World Cup since it was moved to SABC3 with little communication.

Two weeks into the SABC's soccer coverage viewers are now wondering where SABC3 moved it to and if they're missing it due to tuning in at the "wrong" times. The reality is that it doesn't exist.

Meanwhile the SABC, which moved the Afrikaans news from SABC2, saying it had to make space for soccer matches and SABC1 programming, is now again showing news in the 19:00 timeslot – but the Xhosa and Zulu news bulletins, which means that the Afrikaans news could have remained in that slot.

The SABC says SABC3 is supposed to show the Afrikaans news but because SABC3 is also showing soccer matches this week, that it won't be broadcasting the Nuus.

The first time that Afrikaans SABC viewers will be able to see Nuus again, will be on Friday 27 June on SABC3, with no Afrikaans TV news provided in that language by the public broadcaster on SABC2 or SABC3 this week until then.

    So?

      Karen Kruger - 2014-06-25 15:41

second most spoken language in the country which is so. ne?

      Russel Owen Meyer - 2014-06-25 15:51

@KAren: second most spoken language? REALLY???!!!

      Focus Nothecar - 2014-06-25 15:59

      YES Russel Meyer .... REALLY!!

      Eugene Fourie - 2014-06-25 16:01

      who watches SABC still anyway...

      Patrick Mayne - 2014-06-25 16:06

@ Russel, our last South African Census stats. 1) Zulu 22.7%, 2)Xhosa 16 % and at number 3 is Afrikaans 13.5%. English comes at number 4 at 9%. So of course lot of peple are going to complain and it is there South African right to do so. They are voters and Tax Payers.

      Linds Ron-House - 2014-06-25 16:09

Afrikaans is actually number 3, after Zulu and Xhosa.

      Patrick Mayne - 2014-06-25 16:12

And please note, those stats are based on your home First Language.

      Ted Bug - 2014-06-25 16:18

On the positive side Afrikaans speakers might actually hear the truth by tuning into BBC, etc. All SABC provided was propaganda....

      Danie Scheepers - 2014-06-25 16:44

So ...we understand and speak English fluently.

      Patrick MoreFire Vianello - 2014-06-25 16:54

Then I'll take 65% of the white population with me and 90% of the coloured population with me. You such an African nationalist it is unbelievable. You don't get it through your thick head that the vast majority of coloureds speak Afrikaans and cannot understand English. This move actually affects coloureds more than whites because more Afrikaans whites and understand English. We'll chop of 50% of South Africa's land mass and dump it onto Australia, with all the coloureds and whites on it. You such a fool its unbelievable. Do some research. You obviously don't know what a coloured is and his culture and language. There are 4 million of them!!

      Alan Jerrold - 2014-06-25 17:06

It's really just another concrete example of how useless the SABC actually is - another 'Good Story' from the also-useless ANC. All they have ever got right is SARS - so they can then steal and waste billions of the taxpayers' money. Mandela must be turning in his grave about what the new ANC has become. Time for them to get booted out and a decent government - of all races - to be installed who spend our limited tax funds wisely.

      Patrick MoreFire Vianello - 2014-06-25 17:16

For crying out loud - don't you people know that this affects coloureds more!!!!! A lot of Afrikaans whites can at least understand English so can switch to the English channel until the Afrikaans resumes. But the 90% of coloureds CANNOT understand English, so they cannot get any news now!

      Walter Oldnal Latham - 2014-06-25 17:31

SO!..... This is an absolute insult to the Afrikaans speaking peoples of this country and smacks in the face of what Madiba tried to achieve to bring harmony to this nation.

      Audrey Pearl Meyer - 2014-06-25 19:38

      Another racist effort

      Audrey Pearl Meyer - 2014-06-25 19:41

HFVerwoerdMoegoe - looks like compared to you he was more a Einstein

      Alexander Dowding - 2014-06-25 20:17

Doesn't bother me. I get all my news from the Internet. I can be far more selective and it makes it a simple pleasure to avoid government propaganda. Haven't watched any SABC channel for about 12 years now. Don't pay a tv license either as I don't watch television. The Internet is all I need

      Des Yaxley - 2014-06-26 08:14

Actually Afrikaans is the 5th most spoken language in the country. English is the most used language in business dealings.

      Bongani Nsele - 2014-06-26 11:48

they said they don't watch SABC

      Mdu Thekingpimp Sibanyoni - 2014-06-26 12:25

Afrikaans is only wide spread in its use because during bantu education it was forced onto the black majority. Also, in farms, mines and a few other industries the language is forced onto people there as well..... Therefore saying its spoken widely is a VEEEEEEEEEERY invalid point as most people that speak it are not speaking it by their own choice

  • Caryn Meyer - 2014-06-25 15:29

LOL what took the SABC so long to take it off the air

      Siya Ngcangisa - 2014-06-25 16:05

Why does the reporter not contact the SABC for comment? It's as though he/she has own agenda.

      Mike Heyns - 2014-06-25 16:49

@HF the moegoe: Do they speak Afrikaans there??

      Shelle Malan - 2014-06-25 19:16

Hf Verwoerd the moegoe...swine, I fell off my chair laughing at your comment. Why don't YOU ask your government to arrange a rate of exchange of 1:1 for ALL pale faces that want to leave SA ...and you will get your wish...common do it....you know you want you...

      Audrey Pearl Meyer - 2014-06-25 19:44

How long will it take for you to get brains

      Jenny Webbe - 2014-06-26 09:05

#Hf Verwoerd the moegoe - you do realise don't you, that your views exactly reflect the thinking of this Verwoerd? You're not even original in your thinking as he thought of excluding whole language and race groups long before you were even born. So if you loathe him and his policies so much, why are you trying to give them life again, by wanting to get rid of the white natives of SA and deny them their language? Remember dear, that what goes around comes around.

  • Rudi De Jager - 2014-06-25 15:29

so does this mean afrikaans speaking south africans we dont have to pay tv License

      Luks Jozi - 2014-06-25 15:34

      whatever...

      Rudi De Jager - 2014-06-25 15:36

show us the demographics of who pays

      Hf Verwoerd the moegoe - 2014-06-25 16:28

No,you dont have to be here.

      Mike Heyns - 2014-06-25 16:50

      En geen meer belasting nie!

      Audrey Pearl Meyer - 2014-06-25 19:48

Is there anyone that still pays for crap?

      Malcolm Nicolson - 2014-06-26 15:32

Yes, those that want SABC news in Afrikaans should stop paying for their TV (SABC) licence. That would hit the SABC hard. What percentage would that be of the TV licences that are collected? I think it will be a high percentage, those in government houses and shacks are smart enough not to pay, try force someone to pay when they have no money. If Afrikaners did not pay, the SABC will get the message where their money comes from.

  • Richard Zanner - 2014-06-25 15:31

This does not distress me much. We have 11 official languages which is already crazy and somewhere we need to get to one standard language.

      Fanie Gerber - 2014-06-25 15:36

Strangely Richard, Afrikaans is after Zulu, but surprisingly before English the most undstood language in the country. The same rural groups that voted ANC....their own language and Afrikaans. So Keep Zulu Afrikaans and English News...trash the rest

      Mike Heyns - 2014-06-25 16:51

No, no , I have, I have it???? SPANISH!!!!!!

      Mike Heyns - 2014-06-25 20:28

@Susan: Depending on your Province! In the Western Cape (according to Census 2011) 50% Afrikaans, 20 English and then the rest!?

  • Tavengwa Chivirira Muchini - 2014-06-25 15:31

      Audrey Pearl Meyer - 2014-06-25 19:51

Kolobe actually the "news" as they call it is just a load of crap anyway so I think no-one will miss SABC

  • Alta Van Niekerk - 2014-06-25 15:35

Watch the Afrikaans news on Kyknet (144 or 145)at 19:00 instead. It is much more comprehensive anyway. And you don't the premium DSTv package either for 145. One of the cheaper packages will do.

  • Andrew Moore - 2014-06-25 15:36

so wat is die probleem nou eintlik????? daar is afr nuus om 7nm op KYKNET (kanaal 144) op DsTV.

      Andrew Terr - 2014-06-25 15:45

Dit is reg.V*k hulle en kyk net op KYKNET dut is al.

      Juann Strauss - 2014-06-25 15:57

      Mc Segal - 2014-06-25 17:12

      don't pay tv lscence ...simple

  • Dingaan Ndebele - 2014-06-25 15:37

I am so glad I don't pay tv license nor are a watcher of a.n.c propaganda channels...

      Busisiwe Mavuso Grace - 2014-06-26 13:20

I think you are what they call a "roof kyker" you are only saying this because you don't want the rest to know that you are actually watching tv but you are not paying your tv licence! And after all why do one have to pay DSTV which already includes SABC and have to pay for a tv licence which only shows SABC? This is double payment!!!!

  • Putco Lebepe - 2014-06-25 15:37

This is not a "nice thing to do" as SABC puts it when they encourage us to pay TV licence. So all Afrikaans speaking people must stop paying TV licence....

      Ronald Gibson - 2014-06-25 15:54

But we are always expected to pay, "because it is the right thing to do." My motto will be the same as the government from now on - "look after your own and not the others."

  • Richard Hipkin - 2014-06-25 15:37

    Anyone still watches SANC??

      Fussed Anderson - 2014-06-25 15:54

I do, rather not pay for repeats than pay for repeats

      Daisy Jones - 2014-06-26 08:58

Yes, unfortunately not everyone can afford satellite tv.

      Joan du Toit - 2014-06-27 08:41

Did you mean SABC, Yes all those folk who cannot afford the pay channels which in any case is a load of rubbish with continuous interruptions and repeats - but if that is your level stick to it.

  • Sybrand Swart - 2014-06-25 15:38

Really who watch SABC - Kyknet has NEWS @ 7 in Afrikaans

      Jaco Wium - 2014-06-25 23:52

  • Ntlanganiso Qwabe - 2014-06-25 15:40

Excellent news, this is new South Africa and if they want Afrikaans news they must go to Dutch.

      Willa Prinsloo - 2014-06-25 15:49

And you should go to the UK if you want English News. See how stupid your argument is ?

      PointBlank - 2014-06-25 15:53

      Dutch is not a country.

      Craig Banks - 2014-06-25 15:55

go to dutch? you must go to school.

      Roan van der Walt - 2014-06-25 16:03

WOW go to dutch you say, Go back to school, btw SABC was created by Afrikaans, well then came the BEE and well SABC is probably the worst ever after all the idiots have been sitting back collecting and not creating a better combined channel, DSTV is huge in SA created by ? Grown by ? answer yourself.

      LiveYourOwnLife - 2014-06-25 17:51

Ntlanganiso Qwabe let us deconstruct your comment for a second shall we? "if they want Afrikaans news they must go to Dutch" Firstly the word you are looking for is Holland as Dutch is not a country it is a language and a nationality. Secondly my clearly lowly educated friend Dutch and Afrikaans are not the same language, similar yes but not the same. So in closing you racist uneducated little moron SHUT YOUR FAT TRAP!

      Angus du Plessis - 2014-06-25 19:24

Lol, jy moet jou skoolfonds terug vra

      Audrey Pearl Meyer - 2014-06-25 19:54

I hope they all stop paying their TV Licences and then they must go to hell

      Lydia Benkenstein - 2014-06-25 19:56

And then you must go to Nigeria or the Congo, and speak french.

      Frankie van Rensburg - 2014-06-26 15:50

      Afrikaans is NOT Dutch

  • Nsizwa Dlamini - 2014-06-25 15:40

They should switch on to Zulu or English news. they are official languages as well, which they should understand like we understand theirs.

      PointBlank - 2014-06-25 15:53

Well if we were taught Zulu in school like you were taught English we would understand.

      Nsovo Jeremiah Komati Sambo - 2014-06-25 16:06

You can opt to learn Mr PointBlank - you don't have to ber forced

      Nsizwa Dlamini - 2014-06-25 16:35

Language is not learnt only at school. You have been in this country since birth with housekeepers that are black yet you want a class. Are you that dumb???

      LiveYourOwnLife - 2014-06-25 17:52

Thanx but I rather learn languages that have international significance.

      Nsizwa Dlamini - 2014-06-26 15:36

@LiveYourOwnLife does Afrikaans have "international significance" @Wynne Strydom can you trade internationally in Afrikaans? You guys need some thinking ability. You were raised by black mamas yet you cant speak the language. You are dumb.

SABC must not play racist, and descrimination. We need Afrikaans news, they must accomodate every language; as it is on Constitution. I think is the tactic failure of the ruling party : they still feel inferior even they are in power.

  • Seshike Samuel Mmoledi - 2014-06-25 15:57

If that is the case then there should be no two nguni language news on tv,as we are in a democratic country and all cultures and languages should be equally treated.SABC should investigate the matter and find the truth out of that and solve that problem.Let us forget about the past and our country forward together,Whites,Blacks,Indians and Colourds, let us all be responsible and take Tata Manela's legacy further and further and further to build this rainbow nation better for coming generation.

      Pauline Hanekom - 2014-06-25 16:00

The majority ACTUALLY can understand Afrikaans. After Zulu it's the biggest language in South Africa.

  • Franklin Fransman - 2014-06-25 16:00

Is dit hulle manier om Afrikaans stadig maar seker van ontslae te raak?Ek is stom.

  • Elaine Janse van Rensburg - 2014-06-25 16:00

AFRIKAANS IS MY LANGUAGE EN YOU BETTER SEE THAT IT BAck on sabc 2 - it is one of SA's official languages and PLEASE PUT IT BACK WHERE IT BELONGS OTHERWISE ALL OF US WILL STOP PAYING OUR LICENCE FEES. DAMMIT ENOUGH IF ENOUGH

      Chriestopher Simpiwe - 2014-06-25 16:15

theres no need to make nose, or insult, people must just be fair, they musnt politicalise this thing, its not because its afrikaans now, to me lets be paitiant thing will be back to normal soon, we now the reason we musnt act as if we dont know, lets not blame sabc at this time, we enjoy soccer

      Malcolm Nicolson - 2014-06-26 15:41

Elaine, the majority of SABC viewers don't pay their TV licence. They cater more for this majority. Afrikaaners, in the majority of cases pay their TV licence, or they drag you threw the legal system. They can't do that to SABC's majority viewers for financial and other reasons. Afrikaners should pull the plug on paying their SAUK licence, reason being non service delivery.

      Malcolm Nicolson - 2014-06-26 15:46

Chriestopher, I don't see any insulting here. Just anger at being cut off. Enjoy the football, hope ESKOM keeps the power on when the games are on.

  • Seshike Samuel Mmoledi - 2014-06-25 16:00

If that is the case then there should be no two nguni language news on tv,as we are in a democratic country and all cultures and languages should be equally treated.SABC should investigate the matter and find the truth out of that and solve that problem.Let us forget about the past and take our country forward together,Whites,Blacks,Indians and Colourds, let us all be responsible and take Tata Manela's legacy further and further and further to build this rainbow nation better for coming generation.

      Thato Morakganye - 2014-06-25 16:16

so sorry this had to happen to your language

      Sindiswa Molefe - 2014-06-25 16:29

LOL .Thato that is so typical of us we like to involve ourselves on things that has absolutely nothing to do with us ,sadly when we were affected the very people turned a blind eye a voted for the system because it was favourable to them .

      Malcolm Nicolson - 2014-06-26 15:52

Forget about the SABC investigating itself. Yes, lets move forward and leave the past behind. moles, people that hold grudges of the past an apply them to the future are the ones that hold back progress. Do you want to be a stick in the mud, or move forward?

  • Firstseed Mbeva - 2014-06-25 16:02

16 June 1976 Aftermath I guess.I hope I will remember the actual cause of that massacre

  • Eugene Marais Swart - 2014-06-25 16:03

I don't watch the Afrikaans news on SABC as i find it to be biased. Instead I find the Afrikaans news on kykNet a lot more news worthy. If you don't have DStv then I feel your pain. Afrikaans is always disrespected even though it is the 3rd or 2nd most spoken language in our country (beating English that is only 4th or 5th - STATSSA) Disappointed!

  • Theo Martinez - 2014-06-25 16:03

I dont speak Afrikaans so it's not my problem, but if I am not mistaken, the Afrikaans news had the highest viewer numbers from all-language bulletins, and thus from that perspective it's a very strange, absurd, non-sensical decision.

  • Theo Martinez - 2014-06-25 16:04

maybe they can just repeat the old news on their PVR cuz it's all the same: crime, corruption, stupidity

  • alta.duplooy3 - 2014-06-25 16:04

This is highly unproffessional, now SABC want to pass the buck. I smell a rat. First the lands, now the Afr Nuus, let's see... What's next untill civil war.

      Nsovo Jeremiah Komati Sambo - 2014-06-25 16:14
