Cape Town – The SABC wants people to pay their TV licence and says there is now more than 10 000 places nationwide where South Africans can pay or renew their TV licences.

The SABC says the income from TV licenses is used to produce local content and that people can make a difference by simply paying their TV licence.

"Consumers don’t have to change their schedules or routines or go out of their way to find somewhere to pay and renew their TV licence," says the SABC, saying pay points are available nationwide.

The SABC is launching a new ad and marketing campaign to make it entertaining for viewers to pay their TV license. "Having over 10 000 nationwide outlets to pay or renew domestic or business TV licences, the SABC has successfully made this task more convenient than ever," says the South African public broadcaster.

"The campaign aims to offer a fresh and entertaining way to inform consumers that their entertainment ticket or TV licence is available in store," says Jacques Coetee, the SABC’s marketing manager of SABC Audience Services division. "The campaign also focuses on how all South Africans can make a difference to the lives of millions of their fellow citizens – simply by paying their TV licence," says Coetzee.

About the new marketing campaign says Liam Wielopolski, the executive creative director at DDB that the ad agency opted to lead with supermarkets in the new TV commercial and in the print advertisement. "Being able to pay your TV licence at over 10 000 outlets means entertainment is at the store. We wanted to bring this insight to life by recreating much-loved movie moments in the store environment and enable consumers to experience the world of entertainment brought to you by paying your TV licence".

I only watch DSTV-channels and not the crap on SABC, so why do I have to pay for a license. It's time to treat the SABC like the E-toll system....Boycott it because its total rubbish !!

a tv licence is so 3rd world and laughable to say the least. if they could tax every breath u take they would.

  • Adiel De Villiers - 2014-03-10 14:57

Really, after the disaster the SABC has become. you are campaigning for money. Please. this is an ANC mentality. We suck, but you have to pay. for your bad roads, pay more, for your bad education, pay more, for your bad health system, pay more, and we will take and take, until this country is ruined.

  • Stephen Redford - 2014-03-10 14:58

Please can we eliminate this "tax" that only a few pay, and costs a fortune to collect.

  • Frederick Soolhoring - 2014-03-10 14:58

The day I pay for their crap, is the day I eat my own liver.

  • Leon Pieterse - 2014-03-10 15:17

TV licence is a misnomer as the income goes to the SABC, so it should be called an SABC licence. I don't usea motorcycle, so I don't have or pay for a motorcycle licence. Why is the SABC any different?

  • Theuns Jacobs - 2014-03-10 15:37

Its not a case of convenience, but rather the k*k you dish up on your channels. Add to that the amount of money that you waste and steal. Sorry sabc, I will NEVER pay, no matter how convenient you make it!!!

  • Ian Wainwright - 2014-03-10 15:48

Pity they dont have 10000 different programmes to choose from. I see they are screening 'Magnum PI'. Oh glory!

  • Magomarele Gomi Thobejane - 2014-03-10 16:02

The reason we're not paying for that rubbish is not because we run out of places to pay in, it's because we don't want to. Get it within yourselves you bloody useless SABC people!

  • Alex Richards - 2014-03-10 16:11

Please DSTV block SABC on my decoder!

Perhaps we would all be more inclined to pay our tv license fees if the SABC could 1) account for the millions of rands collected which, if the media is to be believed, have "disappeared", and 2) air remotely watchable tv instead of the cr@p we are currently subjected to.

If sabc had a pay per view system then they would sit and smell the coffee. They should start to visit the so called poor who all have TV's wherever a light pole can be connected. I can tell you the these are not the old versions but Huge sets 32" and up. Mostly stolen because in the eyes of the municipalities and government they are supposed to be indigent, paying no rates, water or lights.

Funny how the collections department for SABC is run so efficiently. Why then is the general running of the SABC in such shambles? It doesn't take a matriculant to figure out why!

      TC - 2014-03-10 17:15

Collection dept running smoothely? Huh? They are absolutely useless. They record-keeping is rubbish. They are clueless. I have resorted to simply ignoring their communication because I refuse to inform them of changes etc for the umpteenth time, wasting my valuable time. Sorry, as far as I am concerned the SABC does not even exist.

      Lo Philips - 2014-03-10 18:34

Agree TC. I have not even received an account for my TV license but I see that over R100 is already added to their sms messages probably as interest. They can go f$ck themselves I will not pay 1 cent before they stop broadcasting all these repeat programmes and shove their interest for late payments up their a$$es.

Just try to renew your TV licence if you have been working outside the country! You need to get documentation from HomeAffairs to prove you were out of the country, a tax certificate from SARS, proof that you sold or gave away your TV. They won't even accept that all you want to do is to pay the outstanding amount and renew your licence.

  • Angela Sandells - 2014-03-10 21:06

Try cancelling the damn thing when someone dies!

  • Bello Gioielle Osservare Profumo - 2014-03-11 00:05

State parasites everywhere... together we can steal more ...

  • Priscilla Smith - 2014-03-11 17:10

What's entertaining about paying out our hard earned money for total garbage? And for useless programmes that no other country in the world wants to watch! Any trash going? Sell it to SABC - they buy anything!

  • Morne Rhys Botha - 2014-03-12 21:23

Subject of tv license makes my blood boil. I have DSTV and have not watched any SABC channels in years. Paying for a service I don't use and the majority that do watch SABC don't pay.
