SABC plays musical chairs with top shows

Cape Town – In a massive programming movement the SABC is reshuffling many of its flagship shows.

SABC3 is moving local soap Isidingo permanently to 19:30 from Monday October 3 – an hour later than the current cutthroat 18:30 where the soap battles against incredibly strong soaps from rival broadcasters.

The Isidingo timeslot change is part of a massive realignment of the SABC3 daytime and evening schedules.

Sources tell Channel24 that the timeslot change for Isidingo was finally decided on by channel executives after a positive response and increased viewership when it was moved later on the schedule due to cricket.

Meanwhile, SABC1 is moving The Bold and the Beautiful as an international soap into the 18:30 timeslot that Isidingo is vacating and moving the weekday local magazine shows on SABC1 to 18:00 from October.

"Instead of having SABC2's 7de Laan and SABC3's Isidingo both battle it out as local SABC soaps at 18:30 against each other and against strong rival soaps, there will be just one local and one international soap from the SABC at 18:30," says an insider, "and then another local SABC soap later in the evening where more viewers can see it and have shown they want to rather watch it."

Top Billing moves again

Top Billing, SABC3's weekly glam entertainment magazine show, is moving timeslots again, barely five months after the Tswelopele Productions show moved in April from Thursdays to Tuesdays. From October Top Billing will move to later on Tuesdays to 20:00 with the News in 60 Seconds following at 20:59.

On SABC1 programming executives are planning to move Real Goboza from Saturdays at 18:00 to Tuesdays at 19:00 while the local second season of Dance Your Butt Off will move to Saturdays at 17:30.

Skeem Saam is a new local drama starting in October on SABC1, while Zoned will be a new reality magazine show starting on Tuesdays at 18:00. SABC3's Dr Oz will also start to repeat on SABC1 from Tuesdays to Fridays at 10:30.

Days replacing Oprah

SABC3 has chosen Days of Our Lives to inherit the coveted Oprah timeslot with Days airing at 17:40 from October in a cascading timeslot effect that will change the face of SABC3's daytime television.

All My Children will move from 09:30 to 14:00 and will then be followed by The Oprah Winfrey Show at 14:50 from October until the end of its repeat cycle which will end in December. (The midnight repeats of Oprah will remain.)

The Dr Oz Show, which just started on SABC3 and is currently shown at 14:30, is moving later to 15:45 from October. Three Talk with Noeleen Maholwana-Sangqu – currently at 15:30 on SABC3 – is therefore also moving later to potentially get a larger afternoon audience and will get 16:40 as its new permanent timeslot.

Three Talk will then be followed by the drama of the Salem residents in Days.
