SABC1 to air Reeva in reality TV show

Cape Town – The SABC will not be pulling the Tropika Island of Treasure 5 reality show set to start on Saturday on SABC1, despite the shock death of contestant Reeva Steenkamp, who was allegedly shot and killed by boyfriend Oscar Pistorius on Thursday morning.

Meanwhile M-Net and DStv announced that they are are immediately yanking all on-air ads and promotional billboards featuring Oscar Pistorius in the pay-TV operator's "28 Days of Oscars" campaign out of respect for the bereaved.

The SABC tells Channel24 that Tropika Island of Treasure 5, featuring model Reeva as one of the celebrity contestants, will be aired on SABC1 as planned.

Kaizer Kgangayo, SABC spokesperson, confirmed that the first episode of Tropika Island of Treasure 5 will be broadcast this Saturday. SABC1 did not respond to media equiries about the future of the show.

Reeva - a rising star on the South African celebrity scene - was a law graduate and a model who placed 45th in FHM's 100 Sexiest Women in the World in 2012.

Neither the SABC, SABC1 nor the production company Stimulii knew on Thursday morning whether the show would be going ahead, but the SABC confirmed in the afternoon that the show has not been pulled from the schedule.

According to police, a case of murder is being investigated. TV news channels immediately went into overdrive after news of the shooting broke.

In an interview with UK's The Daily Mail last year, Oscar told the newspaper that he keeps a revolver by his bed and a machine gun by the window.

Police are opposing bail for Oscar, who is yet to appear in court to face charges.

Tropika Island of Treasure 5 will premiere on SABC1 on Satruday 16 February at 18:30.
