Cape Town – Reeva Steenkamp, the current Tropika Island of Treasure 5 contestant on SABC1, was left out of the In Memoriam tribute at the 7th South African Film and Television Awards held in Johannesburg on Saturday.

The segment honours people in television and film who have died during the past year.

The usually botched In Memoriam tribute was however, for the first time in the history of this usually dismal South African TV awards show, done properly.

The In Memoriam segment is a tribute dedicated to South African film and television talent on and behind the scenes who've passed away in the last year. A noticeable omission was Steenkamp who appeared on SABC1 an hour before the Saftas started on SABC3.

29-year-old Reeva, a model, was shot and killed in Oscar Pistorius' home on Valentine's Day.

The producers said they're going ahead with the broadcast of the reality show with Steenkamp in it because her TV contribution needs to be shared.

No obvious production mistakes

For the first time ever the tribute segment was not marred by obvious production mistakes like in the past. No names were obscured by the musical act or weird camera angles, names were each individually flashed, fully, on screen and were then also shown on the stage screen.

There were no spelling mistakes, no sound problems, and the string-heavy sentimental musical number Khumbul'Ekhaya performed live by The Muffinz was appropriate in tone and performance. The simple design of black and white tribute cards also worked.

"Thank you to The Muffinz for a deeply moving tribute to some very talented people. They may be gone, but their work lives on," said Connie Ferguson, co-host of the 7th Saftas.

The Saftas In Memoriam segment honoured Marjorie Brooks-Morris, Greg Cameron, Jan de Klerk, Jaco Espach, Justin Wayne Fouche, Milla Louw, Hulisani Memetsi, Richard Matthews, Thami Geoffrey Mbenge, Humble Mhlongo, Morgan Naidu, Lloyd B Phillips, Llewelyn Roderick, Daniel Richmond Setshedi, Zwelakhe Sisulu, Andre Smit, Andrew Thompson and Louis van Rensburg.

She appears in one television show which requires no talent & she deserves to be honored?

      Priscilla Smith - 2013-03-18 11:01

I totally agree with MrsZwane! Before she tragic death I had never heard of her! What about ordinary people being murdered every day? Not a mention of them!!! Or perhaps not as newsworthy???

      Fritz Deelman - 2013-03-18 12:01

agree 100%... how many people can honestly say they had ever heard her name before her unfortunate death? now suddenly she's exalted by our pony-press-esque media to 'darling of SA' status... i mean seriously!

Nobody has ever heard of several of the names mentioned above either!

      Mally Gee - 2013-03-18 14:48

Yes Mrs Zwane, she should be honoured just as they honoured the others in Memoriam.

Appearing on Tropika, a reality show, does not make you a tv talent of any sort! They were right to omit her!

  • Colin Spear - 2013-03-18 12:17

How does being a contestant on a show qualify you as a "television talent"? Reeva was an accomplished model and does deserve tribute but wailing about her not being included in a medium that she didn't work in is a little short sighted. If you used these standards you could ask why Garth McLeod wasn't included also.

Hahahaha didnt anyone notice the use of "usual" instaed of "unusual". The "usually botched in memorial tribute" & "usually dismal SATV awards". Come on NEWS24 get your act together!!!! Personally I think the ceremony was arranged by NEWS24!!!

If anybody can tell me what has she contributed to the industry I would apologize.... I stand corrected

      Deon Louw - 2013-03-18 16:31

She was a very pretty girl.

  • Nats Brown - 2013-03-18 16:34

Um, last time I checked Reeva died this year not past year. Unless the calendar's changed in which case I didnt get the memo. Damn these Mayans! ;)
