Simon Cowell returning to The X Factor

Los Angeles - Simon Cowell is returning to The X Factor.

The music mogul - who quit the ITV show in 2011 to concentrate on the US version - has confirmed he will have "a role" in this year's series after finding it "difficult" being away from the programme in the last two years.

He said: "I'm definitely getting more involved and will have a role in the next series. I'm not going to lie - I do miss doing it, because it's like my baby.

"It's been difficult the last two years not being on the show as I always had a great time and the last time that I did do it, it was such a brilliant year. So at some point of course I'm going to come back and do the show."

'Wait and see'

But Simon remained tight-lipped on growing rumours Sharon Osbourne looks set to return to the panel at the expense of Tulisa, saying: "You'll have to wait and see (...)"

The Britain's Got Talent panellist's last series on The X Factor saw boy band One Direction finish in third place behind winner Matt Cardle and runner-up Rebecca Ferguson - and the 53-year-old star is surprised the Little Things hitmakers have remained so "grounded" since shooting to fame.

Speaking at a fundraising event for children's charity Shooting Star CHASE, he told HELLO! magazine: "With One Direction it's amazing with all the success they've had that they remain grounded and are still fun. They're a handful, but we knew that, that's what I liked about them."
