Los Angeles – Marvel's box office smash The Avengers will soon be bringing its unique brand of superhero antics to the small screen.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, US television network ABC has ordered a pilot episode of S.H.I.E.L.D, a new live-action TV series set in the Marvel universe and named for the elite military law enforcement agency which featured in Iron Man, Thor, Captain America and The Avengers.
The Avengers director Joss Whedon, who is already on board to direct the movie sequel, has been tasked with the role of executive producer and serve as head writer on the project, with his brother Jed Whedon and his wife, Maurissa Tanchareon, working alongside him.
Whedon is also expected to direct the pilot episode should his schedule permit.
A-list stars
Deadline reports that production on the pilot is set to begin immediately, and there has been no word yet if any of the movie's A-list stars (Robert Downey Jr, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Mark Ruffalo) will be involved.
The S.H.I.E.L.D project marks Whedon's return to the format which made him a household name as the mastermind behind cult TV favourites Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Firefly and Dollhouse.
In the comics, S.H.I.E.L.D (which stands for Strategic Hazard Intervention Espionage Logistic Directorate) revolves around unit director Nick Fury, who recruits Iron Man, Captain America, The Hulk and Thor to form a team to stop Thor's adopted brother Loki. The organisation made its debut in Strange Tales #135, which was published in August 1965.
The Avengers movie was released in April this year and swiftly went on to become one of the highest grossing movies of all time, raking in nearly $1.5bn around the world to date.
Both Marvel and ABC are owned by Disney.
