The top 5 Idols take on their idols

Johannesburg - Idols SA season 11 is down to the “thin end of the competition” now, as Idols SA judge Randall Abrahams likes to say, with only four contestants vying for the public’s vote in this Sunday’s spectacular at the State Theatre in Pretoria. But which four will it be?

With way more than 8 million votes being cast this week, fans of the remaining five potential winners –  Karabo, Loyiso, Mmatema, Rhema and Siphelele – will undoubtedly be on tenter hooks, waiting for the verdict.

In the meantime the top 5 Idols are preparing to sing two songs from some of their own musical idols, while the guest star this week happens to be the idol of many a young South African. None other than the Kalawa Chikita, performance poet and singer Busisiwa.

Here are the songs the contestants are rehearsing this week:

24-year-old Karabo Mogane from Mbombela has chosen the Luther Vandross classic So Amazing, and the James Brown anthem It’s a Man’s World

At 16, Loyiso Gijana from Uitenhage is the youngster of the group so he went with more modern choices: One Direction’s Little Things, and the Sam Smith hit Leave Your Lover.

The only woman left standing in this competition, 23-year-old Mmatema Moremi from Limpopo, chose Fantasia’s Lose To Win and the showstopping Céline Dion power ballad Because You Loved Me to show off her particular skill set.

Rhema Varrie (21) from Alberton keeps it old school with the Etta James standard I’d Rather Go Blind and some of Marvin Gaye’s Sexual Healing.

And 24-year-old Siphelele Ngcobo from Inanda is sticking to South African classics: Ringo Madlingozi’s Kum naKum and Lira’s Feel Good.

Catch the performances on Sunday at 17:00 on M-Net (101) and Mzansi Magic (161).
