Cape Town – TopTV's latest and growing overall subscriber base has now surpassed the 300 000 mark.
Channel24 has established that On Digital Media (ODM), which commercially launched TopTV in May 2010 as South Africa's new pay TV service, now has in excess of 300 000 subscribers – 100 000 more than the 200 000 TopTV subscribers the company managed to sign up by the end of December 2010.
At the launch of the service in May 2010, Vino Govender, ODM's CEO, told Channel24 that TopTV would need 500 000 subscribers after three years to remain a viable business.
Commenting on their subscriber growth, TopTV told Channel24: "We're happy with it in terms of business forecasts and our growth plans".
300 000 subscriptions means that ODM has already acquired 60% of the TopTV subscriber base needed by the end of April 2013.
Allay fears
TopTV's improved subscriber numbers will allay some fears and restore trust in the perceptions of the longterm viability of TopTV by the wider South African TV industry.
While TopTV started off with a lot of goodwill as a new pay TV upstart, the market has been more negative in its outlook of TopTV in recent months, mostly due to some broken promises and a lack of regular updates, news and developments from the company.
The ongoing subscriber growth indicates the viability of TopTV's offering as a pay TV platform in South Africa.
It also indicates the continuing demand from South Africans for affordable pay TV options, as well as the willingness of average consumers to use a part of their limited disposable income on subscription television despite strenuous economic circumstances and a sluggish economy.
