Johannesburg - With the changing trends in the television industry, competition is becoming fierce. And SABC3 will not take the challenge lying down.
The channel has launched a thrilling line-up for next month and September – a mixed bag of local and international content.
The posh Epicure Restaurant in Sandton hosted the event this week to reveal its new programmes, offering viewer tension, drama, humour, reality and movies.
Media personality Musa Mthombeni, the emcee, brought along his humour and charm.
Entertainment commentator Phil Mphela, the cast of Isidingo and industry players were all ears for the big announcement.
New shows include Survivor Cambodia, Top Gear, @ The Table – a celebrity cooking show – Harry and Meghan: A Modern Love Story and The Docket.
On August 22 catch the premiere of The Docket, which was commissioned by the public broadcaster Clive Morris Productions.
Look out for stars, including Hlubi Mboya and Ashish Gangapersad, and some new talent.
Executive producer Lala Tuku said an audience study conducted two years ago by the National Video and Film Foundation indicated that crime drama attracted a great deal of interest and “it was ranked number two on the list”.
Khayelihle Gumede, director of The Docket, said the drama is ideal because South Africa is a crime-curious nation. “This is because of our violent past and what we deal with daily. Crime is a genre that helps to unpack the psyche of South Africans.”
General manager for SABC TV David Makubyane said: “In recent years we’ve had the challenge of making too many changes. The 80/20 rule also affected the programming.”
He said it was important to understand what the audience wanted and it had nothing to with race or social class. He said now the channel was clear about what it stood for and its content spoke for itself.
“When we say ‘The Stage Is Yours’, we are saying to the viewer you can achieve your goals whether you are in an urban or rural area, as long as you have faith.”
