Johannesburg - He celebrated his 24th birthday on Saturday and that makes Thato Makape the oldest contestant for season 14 of Idols SA.

Not only that, he is also this season’s longest traveller – having travelled 1 250km from Postmasburg in the Northern Cape to Cape Town for the auditions in February.

To save for the long trip, Makape says he had to work as an occasional barber and do singing gigs.

“The plan was to attend all the auditions should I not make it in Cape Town. I had told myself that it can’t be possible that I go to all these auditions and not make it in any one of them,” said Makape, who is one of the remaining 10 contestants.

After more than 24 hours of road trip – changing buses and taxis – exhaustion did not bother him much as he was determined to make it.

“I told myself that sweet comes from sweat and I had to work hard. Getting the golden ticket was a moment and a half and I could not stop celebrating.”

He said he started working as a barber after dropping out of school in Grade 11 because he had to make ends meet to help his sick mom.

“There was no income, so I had to make a plan. I decided to use my singing talent and my barber skills to make money. People loved my job and every time I was cutting someone’s hair, I would sing – that is how I got my first gig – a wedding.”

As the only child, Makape said all the load was on him.

“It was tough, but for me it was like a stepping stone. I knew that I was going to go through situations like that, or even worse. Pressure kept me going,” said Makape.

His goal is to put Postmasburg on the map.
