Big Bang Theory star talks to us about her new ad campaign

Cape Town - The Big Bang Theory’s Mayim Bialik features alongside Game of Thrones’ Kristian Nairn in SodaStream's new environmental campaign.

SodaStream has turned the spotlight on humanity’s prehistoric preoccupation with single-use plastic bottles with a new environmental global campaign: ‘The Homoschlepiens’.

It aims to raise awareness about the devastating effect that single-use plastic bottles are having on the environment.

Watch it here:

Channel24 had a quick chat with Mayim about her involvement in the campaign.

We haven’t seen you in many adverts - what made you agree to do the SodaStream video?

You’re right, I don’t do a lot of commercials, but I don’t just see this as a commercial; it’s a statement about the environment as well. SodaStream contacted me and said they wanted to set a commercial about the environment in a museum which already sounded like fun since as a geek, I am a museum person! I have known about Soadastream from my Israeli family and friends for years and I grew up having “seltzer” delivered to my house in crates, so I love SodaStream. I even got one for my ex-husband as a Father’s Day gift a few years ago! As for the script, the idea is creating a fictional species that became extinct due to their single-use plastic bottle habit. As a species, we have evolved so much, but much as we know plastic bottles pollute our environment and kill marine life, we continue to use them. Single-use plastic bottles should be a thing of the past and belong in a museum!

Did you enjoy filming the SodaStream commercial?

Oh, yeah. The script is really clever, and working with Kristian was such a treat! Although, he had to do a lot of heavy lifting so I did plenty of telling him what a great job he was doing; and being grateful I did not have to do such heavy lifting! Filming in in Ukraine was a really special experience as well; I have family from there so it made the whole shoot really meaningful and significant personally.

How was it working with Kristian Nairn? Are you a Game of Thrones Fan?

I haven’t watched Game of Thrones – there’s a bit too much gore for me! So unlike everyone on set, I wasn’t familiar with Kristian before I got to work with him. But during the shoot I got to know him, and he is a joy to work with and a true gentleman. And yes, he seems taller and mightier in person than I can even explain!

What’s your best eco-friendly tip?

I try, as much as I can, to reduce my own carbon footprint – I don’t consume animal products for one, but a big one is to simply consume less– I buy fewer things, own fewer things, and donate things I don’t need and downsize even in small ways.
Have you ever been to South Africa?

No, I would love to. I have known many South Africans and find the culture fascinating.  One of my favorite people, Allison Cruddas, who was the chef for my cookbook is a South African. Can’t get enough of her accent.  Or her cashew cheese!
If you could give a Sodastream to anyone in the world who would it be and why?

If I could would give everyone I love a SodaStream machine! I guess I would give Sheldon (a fictional person!) a SodaStream because it might be a hilarious episode.
What’s your favourite Sodastream flavour?

I love plain with some cucumbers!
