Channel24's Leandra Engelbrecht spoke to Bobby Brown about the new two-part miniseries based on his life, The Bobby Brown Story. (Editor's note: Channel24 was barred from asking any questions related to Whitney Houston during the interview process.)

Cape Town – Bobby Brown needs no introduction. The "King of R&B" has been making headlines for decades.

And now the My Prerogative singer is finally telling his own story in the new miniseries The Bobby Brown Story.

The two-part event airs on BET (DStv 129) on Saturday 15 and Sunday 16 September at 20:00.

While he has been reported on many times and featured in movies and documentaries about ex-wife Whitney Houston, this series focuses on his story.

"The story is about my life from when I was a child to coming up. All of my ups and downs, the good times and the bad times," says Bobby during a telephone interview with Channel24.

"It also shows my growth, how I became happy again and learning to love myself again. You’ll see all of that in this show."

'I WANTED TO SHARE THIS WITH MY FAMILY'

For Bobby it was important to be here to tell his story.

“You don’t want nobody to get it mixed up and I wanted to share it with my kids and my wife. I am just grateful that we got it done and that we are able to get it out to the people while we are still here.”

In 2012, Bobby married his manager Alicia Etheridge. The couple have three children together Cassius, Bodhi, and Hendrix.

The Bobby Brown Story picks up where the critically acclaimed The New Edition Story – which aired last year – ends.

Woody McClain, who played the singer in the former biopic, reprises the role.

To prepare for the role Woody spent a lot of time with Bobby and his family where he got to see the kind of man he is.

Bobby has high praise for the 29-year-old.

“I like him a lot; he is a really good kid. I think he is one of the hot new stars to watch. He is a really great talent. I think he did an excellent job.”

The 49-year-old’s personal struggles with substance abuse, his run-ins with the law and his tumultuous relationship with Whitney has been widely publicised.

While he admits that some things were difficult to relive again, the series is also a form of therapy for him.

“It’s just facts, the facts of my life and I can’t be scared of what already happened. You have to be scared of what you don’t want to happen ever again.”

FIRST SINGLE IN SIX YEARS

Along with the show, Bobby has released his first single in six years featured on the soundtrack.

Like Bobby was written by award-winning songwriter Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds and produced musician/songwriter Teddy Riley.

Speaking about the song he says it sums up everything you will see in the show.

“It gives you the answer to all the craziness that I have been through in my life. All the ups and downs. It sums it all up and no matter what you go through you have to stand on your own two feet.”

Bobby also hinted that he plans on coming back to South Africa by the end of the year to tour.

And what does he hope viewers take away from his life story?

“I hope that they take away from this that I am no perfect man but I am working on becoming a better man. I hope they take away from this that I have been through my trials and tribulations but I am trying to be better – God is still working on me.

“I want them to enjoy the series and just know that they don’t have to go through the same things that I have been through in my life.”
