Can Khabonina fix your love?

City Press TV Review

Show: Fix My Love

Channel: BET Africa (DStv 129)

When: Wednesday, 21:30

Fix My Love – hosted by actress, dancer and fitness guru Khabonina Qubeka – helps couples facing difficulties in their relationships on to a path of reconciliation and restoration.

At the Fix My Love mansion, the show’s resident relationship expert, Dr Khosi Jiyane, discusses some of the couples’ troubles and tries to give them hope. The lovers are then sent on a date to try one last time to rekindle their love.

The first two episodes of the show hit all the right spots. While they weren’t celebrity couples, they were people who you might have heard of or know through the media or social media.

In the first episode we met Thabiso, a deejay who was having trouble with his girlfriend, Tsholofelo, who some of you might have come to know as AssQuake. Tsholofelo was featured in the Daily Sun newspaper earlier this year when she declared she was better than Zodwa Wabantu. It was those very headlines that got Tsholofelo into trouble with her boyfriend.

Thabiso was unhappy that she danced without wearing panties. Khabonina surprised the couple while on their date with a lie detector test during which they could ask each other a burning question. Both asked about their love and commitment to each other and then whether they had ever cheated. Turns out, both of them had! Cheating Thabiso even told Tsholofelo that she had brought it on herself. In the end they decided not to fix their love, thank God!

In episode 2 Lebogang, who’s an HIV/Aids activist, tried to mend things with her boyfriend, Mhlali. Their issue? The devil that is social media. Whenever the two have an issue Lebogang takes it to social media and Mhlali wasn’t happy with that. Yet there he was on a couch trying to fix his relationship on national television.

What then became clear, which Dr Jiyane rightfully pointed out, was that these two either had a relationship or a performance. With rumours swirling around that Mhlali had fathered twins with another woman, when Khabonina suprised them with the opportunity of clearing the air with a lie detector test, Mhlali walked out! Who knows what happened there in the end, but I’m sure Lebogang’s Facebook will have all that info.

What I like about Fix My Love is that Khabonina and Dr Jiyane are like caring older sisters. They’re sympathetic, yet ask direct and difficult questions. The one thing that I’ve come to detest about local programming is this sudden and overwhelming need to air people’s dirty laundry for the sake of entertainment and ratings – and Fix My Love plays into that.

Nevertheless, it’s one of the better reality “emotainment” shows.
