'Days of our Lives' officially renewed for 56th season

Cape Town – The inhabitants of Salem won't be leaving TV screens just yet.

Last year the long-running American soapie went on an extended hiatus prompting speculation that it might be cancelled.

At the time contract renewals were being negotiated and the soapie was battling spiralling ratings.

On Wednesday NBC announced that daytime show has been renewed for a 56th season, reports Variety.

Executive producer Ken Corday said in a statement: "We are most grateful to NBC for their enduring faith in the future of Days of our Lives, and we are excited to continue delivering compelling stories to our loyal family of fans into this new decade."

In South African season 51 (2016) airs on e.tv (DStv 194) weekdays at 17:15.
