Four spin-off series planned for Game of Thrones

Cape Town – HBO has announced that it is working on four possible spin-off TV series for Game of Thrones after the conclusion of the drama series based on George R.R. Martin's books, with four different writers who have been appointed to come up with scripts.

The four possible, different shows will all be set within the same fictional, fantasy world of Westeros and revolving around different groups of characters. In a statement HBO said the possible spin-off series will "explore different time periods of George R.R. Martin's vast and rich universe".

Last year George R.R. Martin told Entertainment Weekly in an interview that "there are 8 million stories in Westeros and even more in Essos and the lands beyond. A whole world full of stories, waiting to be told".

Writers Max Borenstein, Jane Goldman, Brian Helgeland and Carly Wray with George R.R. Martin assisting. The writers are not under pressure to turn in scripts since HBO wants to give them time to deliver four different and compelling takes on how to explore more of the Game of Thrones world.

"We'll take as much or as little time as the writers need and, as with all our development, we will evaluate what we have when the scripts are in," said HBO.

The 7th season of Game of Thrones, with the series nearing its conclusion and broadcast in South African M-Net (DStv 101), will start on 16 July.
