Idols SA top 10

Johannesburg - And there were nine. Emotions are high for the top 10 Idols contestants as they wait to hear their fate.

Going home will be a tough pill to swallow for one of the contestants and on Sunday night one of them will hit the road.

Last week Mthokozisi Ngcobo (20), from Umlazi in Durban, looked pretty sexy and charming in a tuxedo jacket as he sung Maxwell’s Ascension.

But his performance got mixed reviews from the judges.

Unathi Nkayi praised him, saying: “To attempt a falsetto with such a deep voice is commendable.”

Somizi Mhlongo did not have much time for him.

“There was no dynamic, no colour. It was bland. It wasn’t nice,” said Mhlongo.

This reporter commends him for choosing a Maxwell song – these chilled type of songs are for him; he gives them his best, but I still think that he can give us more sexiness.

He has a great voice and all, but he holds back when he performs; it’s like he is not sure whether to move around and own the stage or just stand still.

Unfortunately, a beautiful voice and a sexy body will not earn anyones votes.

He is one of the best but last Sunday’s performance just did not do it for me. So I think he is at high risk of kissing the competition goodbye. He will need a miracle to make it to the next round.

The same goes for Nosipho Silinda, who gave a rather dull rendition of Lady Zamar’s Collide.

For a first performer she was just forgettable and did not do justice to the song. I would blame it on the nerves but she has been on the stage more than once.

Randall Abrahams once advised her to use the stage. He told her not to expect us to come to her but she should come to us.

I guess she forgot about that.

Most of the time I was glued to my cellphone because it did not feel like a competition.

The contestants could have done better – they always gave us the best.

The Idols SA viewers have decided who stays and who goes – and all will be revealed on Sunday, 23 September on Mzansi Magic (DStv 161) at 17:00.
