It's a bird! It's a plane! No, it's Tom Welling flying into 'Smallville' one last time

Cape Town – According to EW, Smallville star Tom Welling will guest-star in The CW's upcoming Arrowverse crossover titled Crisis on Infinite Earths.

The dark-haired hunk will be reprising his famous small-screen role of Superman. That means that the TV universe will now feature three different actors as Superman.

The CW's DC world also includes Tyler Hoechlin as Superman - swooping in to give his cousin Kara Danvers (Supergirl) advice - , and Legends of Tomorrow's Brandon Routh who will appear as another version of the iconic hero during the event in which he plays another character.

"For eight years, Arrow has stood on the shoulders of Smallville. Simply put, there would be no Arrow, and no Arrowverse, without it," crossover executive producer Marc Guggenheim said in a statement.

The crossover includes other superheroes: Arrow, The Flash, Supergirl, DC's Legends of Tomorrow, and Batwoman whose own show will premier later in the year with Ruby Rose as the titular character.

Tom starred – as young Clark Kent turned Superman - on Smallville for an unprecedented ten-year run. The first episode aired on 16 October 2001 and the final episode aired on 13 May 2011.

The crossover epic Crisis on Infinite Earths will begin with Supergirl on Sunday, 8 December, followed by Batwoman on 9 December Monday, and The Flash on Tuesday, 10 December.

Then the epic TV event resumes, after America's winter break, on Tuesday, 14 January with Arrow and concludes with Legends of Tomorrow on the same night.
