Reality television has certainly taken a turn for the weird and the eerie – it’s no longer about finding the best singer in the land or following the wealthy around.
The Learning Channel, better known as TLC, is a popular television station known for entertaining reality series such as Say Yes to the Dress, Four Weddings, Cake Boss and 90 Days to Wed. These are ostensibly normal compared to the rest of TLC’s shows.
One such new show is social media’s famous Dr Pimple Popper. It takes us into the medical rooms of one of America’s leading dermatologists, Dr Sandra Lee. She’s known as Dr Pimple Popper because she recorded herself performing thousands of procedures and posted the videos on her own online platform, which then gained a huge following of people who want to see her work.
Many of us entertain ourselves during sleepless nights watching Dr Lee diagnose and remove mysterious lumps and cysts from patients’ skin. She has been a dermatologist for 15 years and has neatly found her niche market.
In one episode, Dr Lee meets patient Angelina, who has been living with a large lump under her left breast which is crushing her self-confidence and affecting her love life. Then there’s Delano, who has been suffering with a huge mass on his upper back, leaving him unable to find employment.
While it is confusing how some ignore cysts and other growths on their bodies (that’s if you don’t take into account how expensive medical treatment is), the humanity with which Dr Lee handles her patients is what makes the show worth watching.
It really isn’t for the squeamish because there’s a lot of cutting and tugging and pulling, and sometimes shooting of pus.
With every episode, things grow weirder, outdoing the show before.
Some of the content is truly mind-boggling, disturbing, entertaining and incomprehensible – all the components needed for great television.
Shows like Dr Pimple Popper definitely make you think about good, old-fashioned popping of pimples, and then make you wonder how entertainment has been taken to such extremes.
Dr Pimple Popper is a great show to watch if you want to escape reality and enter a world of complete confusion. At times what comes on your screen will be unbelievable, eccentric and incredibly entertaining – if laughing with the possibility of simultaneously vomiting is your thing.
It’s not for everyone. Give other people fair warning to leave the room if you choose to watch. If you are into this type of thing, you can be sure that it is so gross that it is great, and you won’t be able to look away.
