Actress Kate Liquorish is having a moment in the spotlight with roles in two local series currently airing.

In Queen Sono on Netflix, she can be seen as the villain eKaterina Gromova and in M-Net's Still Breathing as Abi, a perfectionist who is always there to lend a helping hand to her friends.

Still Breathing – the channel's first drama in almost ten years – centres on a group of former friends who are drawn together again after tragedy strikes.

On what drew Kate to the series she says, "I hadn't read a script like it in South Africa for a very long time: poignant, funny, clever, heartbreaking. It just hits you in the gut. It's magical."

She fell in love with her character the moment she read episode one.

"She's quirky and interesting, fragile, complex, flawed. There's so much. All of the characters are layered in this way."

Her character goes through a traumatic experience in the series about Abi's journey. She says, "Abi has to overcome so much, and when she thinks things can't get any worse, they do. She needs to pick herself up and find herself. It's a beautiful journey."

Bringing the character to life was particularly challenging for Kate.

She explains: "Abi's journey is extremely difficult and if you aren't careful a character like her can become annoying. As an actor you need to be very cautious of playing into the drama and the tragedy as it can quickly become self-indulgent, so with Abi, I tried to play her as a fighter, someone fighting to survive, rather than someone defeated."

One of the main themes in this series is friendship. On whether Kate would be someone Abi would be friends with in real life she says jokingly, "I'm not sure, I think we are so alike that we might irritate each other."
