Katlego Maboe: Tropika Island of Treasure is the entertainment your Monday night needs

Cape Town – Safta award-winning host Katlego Maboe needs no introduction.

From Monday, 5 February the Expresso presenter will be gracing TV screens in primetime when the eighth season of Tropika Island of Treasure returns on SABC3.

Seven local celebrities and seven consumer contestants will compete in physical and mental challenges to win the grand prize of R1m.

Channel24 spoke to Katlego about the show, challenges and what he would do with R500 000 at the Tropika Island of Treasure launch in Sun City.

Upon signing on to do the show he was most excited about visiting the Maldives.

“I have never been there before and I just imagined being on this island paradise and saying, ‘oh guys I am working here it is so difficult,” he jokes.

“And of course assuming the reins of a show that I think is much loved by South Africans and has been followed for many years. It has had great hosts and contestants and really helped launched the careers of a couple of people out there and I can only be excited to be part of that tapestry.”

Unlike the previous season which had a separate host and games master, Katlego will be taking on both roles.

It was important for him to understand the mechanics of the challenges.

“It enabled me to comment like somebody who knows the rules and how the games work and to give the viewers at home a clear idea of the challenges.”

He continues: “It was also important for me to bring my own personality, it could not be a mechanical thing it has to be spontaneous and natural thing and that is what the smooth life is all about.”

The toughest thing about filming on location was the elements. A monsoon rain can sweep across at any given moment and the production crew and contestants just had to play along which often resulted in long day says Katlego.

“But when you look at the finished product you can’t help but be proud of what we achieved with the show.”

Some of his memorable moments are the heart stopping moments during the challenges.

“I remember my heart beating fast and me gasping at every single move thinking ‘wow if this is done now it can change the vibe of the entire game.”

“There is going to be a lot of drama and I think people are going to be sitting on the edge of their seats,” says Katlego.

On why people should tune in to the show Katlego says “it is the entertainment your Monday night needs!”

“I think that people will enjoy it and grow to love each of the contestants. All of them have a way of creeping into your heart and you will be rooting for everyone at the end of the show.”

And how would Katlego fair on Tropika Island of Treasure and do with R500 000?

He laughs, “I am very competitive by nature. I hate losing with a passion and so having said that I would have won. Now that I am becoming a dad I would invest in an education policy for when my son is ready to go to school.”
