Local stars show off their spelling skills

Johannesburg - They grace our television screens and are known for their eloquence and superlative communication skills. But who will fare the best when their language skills are put to the test in a pressure-cooker environment?

M-Net’s brand new family-friendly game show Spellbound kicks off with a very special celebrity episode this week Sunday (20 November) at 17:00.

Carte Blanche’s Devi Sankaree Govender, who used to be an Afrikaans teacher before becoming a formidable investigative journalist, will press pause on catching crooks to possibly win money for charity on the Spellbound stage, while kykNET’s Verslag host and editor of Rapport newspaper, Waldimar Pelser, will bring spelling skills from his journalistic background to the show, despite English being his second language.

The Voice SA’s quirky V-Reporter and 94.7 DJ Stacey Norman will see if she can prove that she has the vocabulary to match that voice for radio and face for TV, and VUZU AMP’s Dineo Ranaka is out to demonstrate that penning all those entries into Dineo’s Diary has stood her in good stead.

Hosted by Jason Greer and Vanessa Marawa, Spellbound will test contestants’ word skills in a fun and interactive way and throughout the season, the show will include super spellers from different age groups.

There will be a round for primary school learners between the ages of 10 and 13, a round for high school learners between the ages of 14 and 18, and rounds for adults of all ages. But for the premiere episode, these four well-known faces will brave the spelling spotlight to play for a possible R100 000 for a charity of their choice.

Devi will be taking part for the Carte Blanche Making a Difference Trust, which provides pediatric units in hospitals with life-saving equipment. Dineo is playing for a charity that is close to her mother’s heart, Little Eden, which cares for persons with intellectual disabilities, while Waldimar will be spelling to make money for Die Rapport Onderwysfonds which provides financial support to students who are studying towards a teacher’s qualification. Stacey will be hoping to make big money for Dignity Dreams, a cause with which she works very closely, which helps girls gain access to sanitary wear that they can’t otherwise afford.
