Cape Town – Mariah Carey's rise to fame is about to become a TV drama.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Starz network is developing a series based on the life of the Grammy-winning singer.

The series will be set in New York in 1986 and will follow the rise of an ambitious 16-year-old bi-racial singer who will become one of the highest grossing female singers of all time.

Mariah will be the executive producer, Brett Ratner (Rush Hour) will direct and Nina Colman will be the showrunner.

Last year viewers were given a glimpse into the pop star's life with her E! docu-series Mariah's World

The eight-part event followed Mariah as she prepared for her worldwide Sweet Sweet Fantasy tour, her break-up with James Packer and her budding romance with back-up dancer Bryan Tanaka.

Mariah recently made headlines for her diva like behaviour on the set of Will Ferrell's comedy The House. (Read more here.)
