Cape Town - Muvhango actors are officially on strike after not being paid their salaries for almost two months. The salaries owed to them were reportedly due be paid by Monday 2 December, but they have not received anything.

The last bit of communication they received was from Leo Phiri, Muvhango’s Line manager in the form of a letter – made available to DRUM – informing the actors that they have still not received payment from the SABC.

"Please be informed that as I write this email, we have not received production's end of month payment from the SABC," the letter read.

"In the absence of a payment guarantee, we have sent correspondence to notify the broadcaster that we will be shutting down production at 2PM this afternoon (Friday 30 November 2019) and we will reopen when we have been paid.

"Sincere apologies for this unfortunate development…," it read.

An actor on the show, who wishes to remain anonymous, says their salaries have not yet been paid.

"I'm in bed as we speak," says one actor who did not wish to be named.

"Maybe this will be a good chance for us to take on other work while we wait because they were strict about us acting in other soapies," she adds.

Another anonymous actor said their show should be moved to another TV station.  “I mean the SABC is a mess right now. Why can’t they sell the show to another channel, finish, and klaar. We have been patient for too long.”

He shared that he has missed two months of his children’s school fees and is getting threats from his bank because he hasn’t paid for his car

"Just imagine, a primetime actor not being able to pay for their car because they have not been paid. But if I called in sick for work, I was going to be disciplined," he says.

When contacted by DRUM, Muvhango publicist Karabo Disetle said he is in no position to comment, "I’d like to assist you, but unfortunately I cannot comment."

Executive producer of Muvhango Duma Ndlovu also refused to comment on the matter,"I cannot comment, I'm very busy right now," he said.
