For his first television role in his career, Nicolas Cage will play Joe Exotic.
The 56-year-old will star as the eccentric zoo owner in a new series based on the article by Leif Reigstad, Joe Exotic: A Dark Journey Into the World of a Man Gone Wild.
According to Variety, the eight-episode limited series is being produced by Imagine Television Studios and CBS Television.
The series logline reads: "The story centres around Joe Shreibvogel, an eccentric, exotic zookeeper in Oklahoma who fights to keep his park - even at the risk of losing his sanity. The series will live in the lion's den with Joe, explore how he became Joe Exotic, and how he lost himself to a character of his own creation," reports CNN.
Since the premiere of the Netflix docu-series Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness the story of Joe - who is currently serving a 22-year sentence for his involvement in a murder to hire plot - has gained traction.
A limited series starring Kate McKinnon as Carole Baskin is also in the works and 20th Century Pictures is reportedly planning a movie following the success of the documentary.
