Outlander star Tobias Menzies will take over the role of Prince Philip in the next two seasons of The Crown

Cape Town – Netflix's The Crown has announced who will take over royal duties as Queen Elizabeth’s husband in seasons three and four.

Channel24 previously reported that Clair Foy as Queen Elizabeth and Matt Smith as Prince Philip will not be returning to keep up with timeline of the series.

It was later announced that Olivia Colman had been cast in the role as the older monarch, with Helena Bonham Carter taking over from Vanessa Kirby as Princess Margaret.

E! News confirmed on Wednesday that Outlander actor Tobias Menzies will be taking over as the older Duke of Edinburgh.

The casting comes after producers of the show admitted that Smith negotiated a better deal than Foy because of his perceived higher profile.

They have since apologised and assured that discrepancy will be resolved going forward.
