Cape Town – Grey's Anatomy actor Jesse Williams was praised for his powerful speech at the BET awards last month.

The actor who plays Dr. Jackson Avery in the long running medical drama accepted the humanitarian award at the ceremony.

In his speech he demanded equal rights and called for an end to police brutality against black people and white appropriation of black culture.

Grey's Anatomy fans are up in arms and have taken to the show's social media accounts calling for a boycott of the show and calling Williams a racist.

A petition has also been started on Change.Org demanding that Williams be fired for 'his racist rant.'

The petition has 2 332 signatories thus far.

However, other fans have come out in strong support for Williams.

Shonda Rhimes, who is the frontrunner of the show, applauded Williams' speech last week.

On Monday Rhimes took to Twitter to have her say about the petition.
