Johannesburg - This year’s South African Film and TV awards (SAFTAS) have kicked off in Sun City and the excitement is uncontainable. Singer Phila Madlingozi, son of veteran musician Ringo Madlingozi, is happy to have won a Golden Horn award for Best Achievement in Original Music/ Score on TV Drama for Isikizi season two.

Currently in the Eastern Cape, Phila says he never saw the award coming and he did not even attend the awards because he didn’t think they would win. “I did not think we were going to win the award but it shows that hard work pays off and when I received the invite to attend the awards I was already on my way home to Port Elizabeth.”

Phila left Johannesburg in December 2017 to do some soul searching because he felt the entertainment industry had become too much for him to bear.

“I was starting to feel lost; I had been working so hard in Johannesburg but I was not seeing any rewards for my hard work.” The singer and actor says his ancestors helped him win the award. “I came to get my blessings here in PE and my ancestors helped us get that award,” Phila says being a veteran’s son comes with so much pressure and expectations from fans and people around him.

“In this industry you have to be a character and being known as just Ringo’s son annoys me.” Phila says he even refuses to walk in the streets with his dad or attend events with him because he will be labeled “Ringo’s son” and not be seen for his acting and singing talent.

“I became gatvol of it all and I just decided to leave Jozi for a bit to get away from the noise and to cleanse my soul at home. I’m not doing anything ritualistic but being away from Johannesburg has helped me to appreciate myself and know who I am so I am able to come back and collect more awards," says Phila.

I can’t wait to meet you my baby.. @saftassa #FREEPHILA
