During the interview Richard revealed that he went off a hill and the car rolled a few times before landing and then bursting into flames.

His experience with cars came in hand in getting him out in time.

"I've probably spent more than most people upside down in cars and it's genuinely more useful when you're in that situation," says Richard.

His wife Mindy was out shopping when she got the call from Richard that he was in an accident.

"There was a phone call and he said, 'I’d had a bit of a shunt'", says Mindy.

Richard had reconstructive surgery on his fractured left knee.

"I can't go walking for a few months and I've been told I can't go running for about a year or 18 months," he revealed.

As a patient Mindy says he drives her mad with it being school holidays she jokingly added she is saddled with "two teenagers and a 9-year-old man".
