SA comedians get ready to battle it out on TV

Johannesburg - Comedy Central is throwing down the gauntlet to South African stand-ups – challenging them to comedic battle in its new local comedy series, the Comedy Central Roast Battle.

Starting on Monday at 21:00, the six-party TV series involves the top comedians jousting against each other in a series of quick-fire comedic battles.

Their only weapons, however, are one-liners, abominable insults and jokes.

Roast Battle will be hosted by comedian John Vlismas.

In each battle, six of the country’s most popular comedians face off against each other, armed with jokes to “burn” their opponents. The winners are decided by guest judges and studio audiences, and whoever wins will move on to the next round.

The contestants told City Press who they would have roasted had they been given the job last year.

Martin Evans

“If I had to roast someone in 2016, I would have loved to roast Danny K. I mean, who in this day and age still has a K in his name/surname? It’s so racist. I would love to roast that guy.” LOL

Donovan Goliath

“I’d roast Donald Trump obviously. Donald Trump’s ego is so big, Cassper Nyovest could do a concert on it.”

Simmi Areff

“If there was one person I would have roasted in 2016 it would be SABC group executive/COO Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

“Leave what he did/did not do at the SABC. He needs to explain to us what that hat was that he wore to the SABC press conference.”

Eric Jansen

“I’d have to say the Olympics last year was my pick.

“If you think about it, everyone in their respective fields have no practical use in real-life jobs ... Unless we start using, like, 100-metre sprinters for high-speed courier services or the long jumpers to jump between buildings.

“They’re just people with too much time on their hands to study and get real jobs.

“All respect to the winners obviously, our record holder Wayde too, but in real life, jobs win. :)”

Rob van Vuuren

“I would roast Donald Trump, if he wasn’t doing such a good job of roasting himself and the rest of the USA at the same time.

“In the meantime, I’ll just roast my marshmallows in the radiated orange glow of the nuclear fallout he is about to cause.”
