Johannesburg - Local car spinner and drifter Stacey-Lee May recently had the honour of working with Charlize Theron.

The 23-year-old, who started drifting cars at the age of 16, rose to prominence after she made an appearance on an SABC1 drifting show and wowed crowds with her daring stunts.

Speaking to YOU, the motorsport star revealed she’d had no idea she’d be working with the South African-born Oscar winner for streaming service Netflix’s first game/reality series Hyperdrive until Charlize showed up for a surprise visit at Stacey’s home in Eldorado Park, Johannesburg.

"I actually didn’t know I’d be working with Charlize. I only found out when she came to my home to surprise me and my family, which was beyond amazing," she said.

Stacey not only had the opportunity to compete with other drivers from all walks of life but also travelled to New York to participate in the show.

"Being part of the show was incredible, just so unreal. When I arrived in New York and we got to the set I felt like I was dreaming."

While the entire experience still feels surreal to Stacey, meeting other drivers on Hyperdrive was one of her highlights.

"Being in a different country with other racers was a bit intimidating," she recalled.

"But once I got to know everyone it was amazing because everyone was so supportive and tried to assist and help one another.

"I can honestly say the racers I’ve met have become family."

South Africans can look forward to seeing "one of their very own trying and pushing to show the world that South Africa is amazing and we have people pushing to become better," she says.

Stacey, who’s nicknamed the Queen of Smoke, started her car drifting journey in high school after she was bullied.

Her father then put her behind a steering wheel to try to boost her confidence.

Does she have words of encouragement for other young women defying odds despite their circumstances? "Keep pushing and always believe in yourself because everything and anything is possible.

"Drifting is my biggest support, but my family serve as my constant inspiration because I’d do anything to make them proud."

The car drifter has also been invited to a spinning competition in Pakistan and would appreciate any support to help her get there. Donations can be made on her GoFundMe page.

During Charlize’s surprise visit, Stacey took her for a spin in her pink BMW and it was quite a bumpy ride.
