Cape Town - Though her emotions sometimes got the better of her, she was always a loyal team mate – and that turned out to be what got her kicked out of Survivor South Africa.

Toni Tebbutt, a content developer from Johannesburg, was voted off the island on Thursday night after 30 days on the island El Nido in the Philippines.

“At Tribal Council, I had a gut feeling that my name was going to come up, but it still came as a shock,” she says.

“When I realised I was being voted out, I was angry – due to the betrayal from Werner and Annalize.”

Toni and Werner, who’d been team mates in Mindanao, had formed an alliance early on in the game.

Tom won the reward challenge on Thursday and as part of his reward he’d decided that Toni and Annalize should spend time on Exile Island.

“[I was especially shocked that Annalize voted against me] after spending the day with Annalize on Exile Island. Immediately after the anger, the hurt set in,” Toni says.

She explains her strategy was to align herself with strong players in order to work together as a strong unit throughout the game.

She finds it comforting that she now gets to be a jury member. “It’s very exciting, as I’m still a part of the Survivor process. The game could have been over for me a lot sooner, so I’m glad to still be a part of it.”

The first thing she did after being voted off? “I hate a huge burger!” she says, smiling.

“The show showed that I lost 5,5kg after my exit, but after I took off my wet socks and shoes, it was actually 6,5kg.”

She says the thing she missed the most while on the island was feeling of safety and emotional security that being surrounded by loved ones back home brought.

“The biggest challenge was dealing with anxiety for tribal challenges, as I didn’t want to let the team down,” she adds.

And the thing she liked best about the whole Survivor experience?

“The silence and solitude of the island, and being unplugged from modern technology.”

Survivor SA airs Thursday nights at 7pm on M-Net (DStv channel 101).
