Cape Town – Terry Pheto has landed the role of a lifetime.
The actress will be the first South African woman to play Winnie Mandela in the mini-series Madiba.
In an interview with City Press she revealed that it is her dream role.
"I think when you have a dream, it scares you sometimes. This is my dream role. It’s a role I’ve always wanted to portray."
Terry will star alongside international stars Lawrence Fishburne, who will play Nelson Mandela, Orlando Jones who will play Oliver Tambo and fellow South African Hlomla Dandala who will play Govan Mbeki.
The six hour mini-series is based on two books written by Nelson Mandela; Conversations With Myself and Nelson Mandela By Himself.
To prepare for the role Terry read Winnie's book, the letters she sent to Mandela while he was in prison and watched documentaries and interviews.
She says that Winnie's story needs to be told.
“It’s about time for this icon to be recognised and her journey acknowledged.”
The series is currently being filmed in South Africa and is set to be released later this year.
