The Netflix docuseries Tiger King continues to rise in popularity, and the one question on everyone's lips is still – what happened to Carole Baskin's husband, Don Lewis?
And now, it seems authorities have started asking that again, too.
Tiger King is a seven-part series that follows the life of roadside zoo owner Joe Exotic and the murder-for-hire plot that eventually landed him behind bars. Joe was sentenced to 22 years in prison for a failed attempt at taking out his rival, animal rights activist, Carole Baskin.
But a large part of the series also circles around the disappearance of Carole's second husband, millionaire, Don Lewis who disappeared in 1997.
Rumours that Carole killed Don and fed him to her tigers made the rounds in the series, leading the Big Cat Rescue owner to come forward and refute those claims in a lengthy blog post.
On Monday, Hillsborough County Sheriff, Chad Chronister, said in a tweet that authorities were now trying to find new leads in the Don case, after the rise in popularity of the Netflix show.
"Since @netflix and #Covid19 #Quarantine has made #TigerKing all the rage, I figured it was a good time to ask for new leads," he wrote, adding a poster with Don's information on it.
According to a 2003 report by CBS affiliate, WTSP, a judge declared Don dead five years after he had disappeared, but the Hillsborough County sheriff's deputies said that they would keep the case open for a while until they were certain.
Speaking to CBS News, Big Cat Rescue's director of public relations, Susan Bass, said they hoped Sheriff Chad Chronister's appeal to the public would "lead to new information" in connection with Don's disappearance.
