Funny lady Tumi Morake is leaving Jacaranda FM. She co-hosted the station’s breakfast show with Martin Bester for almost a year.
“My performance career is taking a new direction and unfortunately radio, with the time and energy it requires at this level, doesn’t fit into those plans. I had a great time and learnt many valuable lessons, yes, even when the pawpaw hit the fan. I wouldn’t change it for the world,” says Tumi.
She plans on, among other things, to co-write on a movie with her husband, Mpho Osei-Tutu; continuing with her TV presenting; an international stand-up tour in Australia; a new stand-up show with Ndumiso Lindi and a number of other exciting ventures that will be announced through the year. She says it wasn’t an easy decision for her to make.
Last year Tumi was in hot water when she used a bicycle-and-bully analogy to explain apartheid. She said it was like bullies on a playground who stole another child’s bicycle, but instead of being punished for their theft‚ the thief and the bicycle owner now had to share the bike and play together.
Listeners complained and even went to the BCCSA but she was later cleared of hate speech for those comments.
Tumi’s last official day on air will be 9 March.
