WATCH: Alicia Silverstone is a 70s mom in new TV show

Cape Town – Alicia Silverstone is back on the small screen in the new series American Woman

The series which also stars Mena Suvari and Jennifer Bartels is inspired by the upbringing of co-executive producer Kyle Richards (Real Housewives of Beverly Hills).

It follows an unconventional mom named Bonnie (Silverstone) struggling to raise her daughters with the help of her two best friends Kathleen (Suvari) and Diana (Bartels) as they discover their own brand of independence amid the rise of second-wave feminism in the 1970s.

This is Alicia's first leading TV role since 2003.

Speaking about taking on the role Alicia told the New York Post that she was inspired and excited by Kyle’s amazing stories.

“It’s not a documentary, it’s a scripted show that is very loosely based on her life. So while Bonnie is inspired by her mom, everyone’s moms end up inside of it,” said Alicia.

In an interview with the New York Times she also said: “This character was so appealing to me because she goes through so much, she’s being knocked down and she gets back up.”

Kelly Clarkson did a rendition of the 1969 song for the series.
