WATCH: The cast of Dear White People try to guess the meaning of South African words

Cape Town - With 11 official languages to its name, it comes as no surprise that people of Mzanzi express themselves with a vocab peppered with words and phrases that have crept in from all languages - regardless of our personal mother tongue.

To mark the launch of season 2 (which dropped on the Netflix platform on 4 May), the cast of hit series Dear White People had a go at pronouncing and guessing the meaning of some of our our widely used local phrases.

The results, as you can imagine, are hilarious.

Dude

DUDE is a grounded comedy about dealing with first losses in life — leaving your best friends, the death of loved ones, and the passage of time — and that odd mixture of grief and nostalgia experienced by young people as they try to understand these losses. It is also about getting stoned with your friends in your car while listening to hip-hop.

She’s Gotta Have It

The 10-episode series is a contemporary update of Spike Lee's revolutionary debut independent film. She's Gotta Have It centers on Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her Friends, her Job and her Three Lovers: The Cultured Model, Greer Childs, The Protective Investment Banker, Jamie Overstreet and Da Original B-Boy Sneakerhead, Mars Blackmon.

On My Block

On My Block, co-created by Lauren Iungerich (Awkward), Eddie Gonzalez and Jeremy Haft (All Eyez On Me), is a coming of age comedy about four bright and street-savvy friends navigating their way through the triumph, pain and the newness of high-school set in LA’s South Central neighborhood.

Chewing Gum

Tracey Gordon is a 24-year-old religious Beyoncé-obsessed virgin. Growing up through the church, with her strict preacher Mother, she has ended up rather 'underdeveloped' in certain areas - but Tracey wants more. We follow Tracey as she embarks on her journey into adulthood, crashing her way through what she should and shouldn’t be doing.

The Incredible Jessica James

Jessica Williams (“The Daily Show”) stars as a young, aspiring playwright in New York City who is struggling to get over a recent breakup. She is forced to go on a date with the recently divorced Boone, played by Chris O’Dowd (Bridesmaids) and the unlikely duo discover how to make it through the tough times in a social media obsessed post-relationship universe.

Friends from College

A group of friends from Harvard played by Keegan-Michael Key (Ethan), Cobie Smulders (Lisa), Annie Parisse (Sam), Nat Faxon (Nick), Fred Savage (Max) and Jae Suh Park (Marianne) are facing down their forties. With interwoven and oftentimes complicated relationships with one another Friends from College is a comedic exploration of old friendships, former romantic entanglements and balancing adult life with nostalgia for the past.
