Johannesburg - The six remaining bakers on The Great South African Bake Off face what has been many a baker’s nemesis in the past – pastries. Danger lurks in raw crusts, leaked fillings and the dreaded soggy bottoms.
For their signature bake, the contestants need to create identical savoury hand pies. Attempts range from an exotic Asian shredded duck, to a classic from South Africa – a chakalaka and boerewors hand pie. Then the technical bake demands the contestants tackle the local favourite, samoosas. The classic triangles cause havoc for many, who struggle to perfect their folding techniques and end up with odd shaped spring rolls.
This week’s showstopper bake brings with it every amateur baker’s horror – a made-from-scratch filo pastry. Bakers are asked to create a spectacular centrepiece and so everybody aims high with flavours ranging from classics like chicken and spinach, to more brave offerings like a cinnamon ice cream with baklava. One even braver baker offers an apple strudel with filo roses.
Pastry Week brings with it an array of tastes, triumphs and tragedies in an episode which ends with a bittersweet bombshell.
