Johannesburg - It’s week three of the Great South African Bake Off and Tart Week dawns.
The remaining ten bakers face a topsy-turvy ride as their signature bake requires them to create a perfect upside down, classic, Tarte Tatin. It’s a rough-puff whirlwind of goat’s cheese, caramelised pineapples and a whole lot more, as the bakers throw everything at their challenge in a highly entertaining French-themed start to the week.
The technical bake of making a Quiche Lorraine – proves to be the unravelling of some. The minimal recipe has some bakers fretting over French words and others wondering what on earth “lardons” are. There were, of course, the obligatory soggy bottoms, as well as some leek ‘eeks’ from the judges.
Cue the bling and mirror glaze. The showstopper bake requires something magical – a designer tart fit for a European patisserie’s window dressing. Creations include a Citrus Gateau St Honore to a decidedly patriotic South African flag design fruit tart.
Episode 3 of the Great South African Bake Off is bursting with energy, fruit, colour and of course all the pressure and drama you would expect from a tart.
