Survivor SA heats up as double Tribal Council hits Vel and Moyra

2014-04-14 11:01
Johannesburg - Tribal council has produced plenty of surprises in the latest season of M-Net’s Survivor South Africa: Champions, but this week the turbulence-meter hit an all-time high with shock after shock.
First, HR Director Moyra Makhina was voted off when her supposedly-loyal friend Graham betrayed her as part of his quest to play a new, more interesting game alongside puppet master Shane.

Then, show host Nico Panagio announced a twist that left the Survivors flabbergasted: an immediate Individual Immunity Challenge at the Tribal Council area, followed by another voting session. The usually rock–steady and honest Buhle, who might have perplexed some viewers with her vote for Vel earlier, won Immunity and decided to gun for Graham this time. But when the votes were read, Vel had to pack her bags.

Moyra and Vel are now the 3rd and 4th members of jury who will choose the Ultimate Survivor and winner of R1m in Survivor: South Africa Champions.
This also means that Buhle is the only female Survivor among the remaining seven castaways - another Survivor SA first for this stage of the competition.
This is how the events leading up to Moyra and Vel’s departure unfolded:
The contestants played a tough triple-threat Individual Immunity Challenge which saw them competing to make it through three rounds of a game which tested speed, then balance before presenting them with a daunting puzzle. Buhle, Sivu and Moyra stumbled at the first hurdle and David, Graham and Vel couldn’t hang on during the second round, leaving Shane, Zavion and Altaaf to battle it out for Immunity in the third. It looked as if Zavion would clinch it again, but Altaaf solved the puzzle first and claimed the Individual Immunity Necklace, making him safe at Tribal Council. In an aside, Zavion hinted that he might have thrown the challenge.
Challenge winner Altaaf was also given the choice of enjoying a cup of fresh coffee and oven-warm doughnuts with two tribe mates of his choice, or taking a bag of rice back to camp for the benefit of the whole tribe. As his tribe mates looked on hungrily, he opted for the bag of rice, drawing widespread thanks due to the lack of food on their beach.
Once the contestants arrived back on their island, Moyra opened the bag of rice and discovered a note, which she handed to Altaaf, unread. It turned out to be a clue to the whereabouts of the Juara Hidden Immunity Idol – the one Shane had found without any assistance. Altaaf shared the news with the tribe, but not the clue, before setting off on an ultimately-fruitless search.
In the meantime, Shane, who’s still sitting pretty with two Hidden Immunity Idols, was playing on Graham’s paranoia, gently persuading him to break up the Rugrats Alliance.
Captains Corne Krige and Mark Fish played for the Salvation Cup in a game of speed, with Corne’s steely stare failing to unsettle quick-handed Mark as the former Utara Captain scooped Salvation powers for the second time in three attempts.
At Tribal Council, Mark bestowed Salvation on Moyra, burning the first vote that came out of the chest for her. Alas, it was not to be, as she garnered the bulk of the votes.
Don’t forget to vote for your favourite Captain – there’s R500 000 at stake for them! Voting is currently open and runs until midnight on 14 May. By voting, you stand to win R10 000 each week, courtesy of WeChat, and a grand prize of a family holiday in Zanzibar, valued at R90 000, courtesy of Lasher Tools, African Encounters and Axis Marketing.
