WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
When Jessica (Krysten Ritter) crosses paths with a highly intelligent psychopath, she and Trish (Rachael Taylor) must repair their fractured relationship and team up to take him down. But a devastating loss reveals their conflicting ideas of heroism, and sets them on a collision course that will forever change them both.
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
Jessica Jones season 3 heralds the end of the Marvel/Netflix collaboration, and the whole world is poorer for it. Because all the other Marvel shows had already cancelled before Jessica Jones season 3 aired it was safe to assume that it would be cancelled too. But the upside of that is Jessica Jones had a chance to close its season without leaving any loose ends.
Season 2 of Jessica Jones was not the best and if anything was a bit of a chore. Trish was beyond annoying, and unfortunately, her self-righteousness has just gotten a lot worse in season 3. Luckily, Trish is one of the two annoying parts of season 3; the other one being Hogarth and her messy life.
Jess, on the other hand, is trying to get her life right. She's hired an actual assistant and is embracing her superhero life. But she's still our sassy, don't give an eff Jessica.
Malcolm, however, has come a long way from season 1. He literally started at the bottom, and now he's selling his soul to Hogarth as her in-house detective. Throughout the season, Malcolm gets increasingly more uncomfortable with his role there, and eventually, he's back to helping Jessica in her crusade.
Aiding Jessica this season is her new guy, Erik Gelden who turns out to have the worst super power ever. Erik gets headaches around people who've done bad things. The worse the person, the stronger the headache. Unfortunately, the pain leaves him pretty much vulnerable, which means Erik is no good on a fight. But he's easy on the eyes, charming and useful for helping Jessica with her sleuthing.
Unlike Trish, who is just a real pain in the behind this season. Trish now has super powers. She's agile, can fight and considers herself somewhat of a detective. But she is so self-righteous and wants to be a hero so badly all she does is put people in jeopardy. Even when she helps out, it's almost not worth the annoyance.
This season's villain is a real challenge for Jessica because it's not one she can just kick her way through. Gregory Salinger is not a super, but he's a highly intelligent psychopath who always seems to be two steps ahead of Jessica. And she's street smart and a good detective; she's not exactly Brain Trust material.
Eventually, she agrees to work with Trish, mostly because it's easier to keep that one in your sights, but Trish truly is just over-enthusiastic in the worse way. Bruce Wayne once said, "You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain," and that's exactly what happens with Trish this season. Salinger doesn't mess with just Jessica and Erik, Trish is a victim to his machinations, and her mother's horrible death tips her in the worst way. It eventually pits Jess against her, and in the end, Jessica has to put her sister away as well.
This season was a vast improvement on the last one, and I'm happy it had a chance to have an ending rather than being left open-ended like the rest of the Marvel titles. It took awhile for the story to get going, but once it did, it was well-paced and intriguing enough to binge-watch.
