WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
Sally4Ever stars Catherine Shepherd as Sally, a marketer who’s lived a dull suburban life with her boyfriend for a decade. On the night he proposes, Sally embarks on a wild affair with Emma, a seductive actress, singer, musician, poet and author. Before Sally knows it, Emma has moved in, rearranged the furniture, and her life.
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
Sally is stuck in a dead-end relationship with David and is clearly unhappy, but doesn’t know how to get out of it. Then she meets Emma and her life changes. Everything is exciting and sexy with this new whirlwind affair, but once the initial excitement dies down, Sally realises that Emma might be a bit more than she bargained for.
And you can’t blame Sally really, after 10 minutes of watching what her relationship with David is like (and the noises he makes while moisturising his feet), you sort of what to end the relationship for her because you can see in her eyes how desperately unhappy she is.
If you’re into cringe comedy, then this is the show for you because you’ll be stuck between laughing at the actually funny bits, and then the bits that just make you uncomfortable and have a bit of shock value.
But if you’re not comfortable with explicit sex scenes, especially ones containing coprophilia, then you might want to give this one a miss.
If you’ve ever seen the British show Gavin and Stacey, you’ll be familiar with Julia Davis who plays Emma. This is quite a different role for her as she played a frustrated woman married to a man that she’s not really happy with. But here she’s the sexy, but clearly unstable Emma - a role which she plays quite well. She’s brilliant at grotesque comedy.
Catherine Shepherd (you might have seen her on Peep Show) on the other hand is great as wallflower Sally, but while you get that she’s mean to be meek and mild, it also feels like you only really get to start to know her towards the end of the season and the entire time you just feel sorry for her as everything seems to happen to her instead of for her.
While there are a lot of funny moments in this show and the first episode sets it up quite well for what seems to be a great comedy, but a lot of what happens after seems to be shock comedy and not genuinely funny moments.
That being said, watching the crazy unfold is a wonder of its own as you watch as Sally becomes unhappier while Emma gets a little crazier with each episode.
