WHAT IT’S ABOUT:
A down-and-out DJ plots to rebuild his music career while working as a nanny for his famous best friend's wild 11-year-old daughter.
WHAT WE THOUGHT:
Turn Up Charlie is probably the closest I will ever get to seeing Idris Elba on the decks.
Having binged all five seasons of Luther not too long ago it was refreshing to see Elba take on a lighter role and tap into his alter ego DJ Big Driis.
In the comedy, drama Elba plays one hit wonder Charlie Ayo – a DJ who had one big hit in the 90s but squander away his money and his short lived fame. Trying to get back into the game he lives with his Aunt Lydia (Jocelyn Jee Esien) and does small gigs like djing at his friend’s wedding.
Conveniently one of his best friends David (JJ Feild) is a successful actor married to a Sara (Piper Perabo) a famous DJ. Through a series of events he becomes their daughter, Gabrielle (Frankie Hervey) nanny (don’t call him manny).
When it comes to plot it’s pretty straight forward as it chronicles Charlie’s setbacks and rise and mixes it up with some ‘family’ drama.
What I enjoyed most about the show are the tender moments between Charlie and Gabrielle.
In the end when Charlie actually pulls himself together you can’t help but be proud of him.
The cast have great chemistry together and a must mention is Jocelyn’s Aunt Lydia, she brought a lot of the comedy.
Don’t expect the series to be ground-breaking comedy though with that said though it is an enjoyable watch that have enough elements that makes it work.
If anything watch it just to see Idris Elba throw his hands in the air and bust a couple of really cool moves.
