Condolences pour in for Senzo Meyiwa's family

Condolences have started pouring for Senzo Meyiwa, who was killed last night.

The Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana goalkeeper was shot and killed in Vosloorus, east of Johannesburg. It is alleged that Senzo was killed outside Kelly Khumalo’s house after an unknown male opened fire in a botched robbery. The suspect apparently demanded Senzo’s cellphone and money. Kelly Khumalo has been spotted leaving the hospital.

SA soccer legend Mark Fish sent his condolences on Twitter. He wrote: "Devasted to hear the news about Senzo... Pirates and SA No1 goalkeeper... our thoughts are with your family... THANK YOU TRUE BUCCANEER!!"

Former Orlando Pirates and Bafana player Andile Jali tweeted: "I can't believe this now after talking to him this afternoon but y yyyyyyy." He added that he couldn't sleep because of the sad news.

In a tweet Mamelodi Sundowns player Teko Modise said the country has lost a special player. Meanwhile, Bafana Bafana player Dean Furman tweeted: "Beyond devastated at the loss of our captain & friend Senzo Meyiwa. Thoughts & prayers are with his family & friends at this terrible time."

Supersport United player wrote: "Can't believe what I'm reading.. 7 years we spent together in the Pirates development! The funniest, loudest and most enthusiastic person." He added, "I've ever had the honour of sharing a change room with! He will be missed by everyone who ever came into contact with him. RIP Senzo."

Minister of Sport Fikile Mbalula also tweeted about the tragic loss. He wrote: "In one week, South Africa lost two sport legends, I was on the couch with Senzo Meyiwa last week on SuperSportTV R.I.P." In another tweet this morning, he added: "Good morning SA we are deeply shocked by the passing away of Senzo Meyiwa. It’s a sad day for South Africa, his family and Orlando Pirates."
