DJ Cleo on why he took a musical hiatus

Johannesburg - DJ Cleo took us all by surprise when he decided to turn his back on an uber successful music career to go play football. 

But what motivated the switch? Cleo says it was for his own sanity.

Posting to social media on Tuesday, Cleo explained that he had to step away from music to fully appreciate it and become "a fan of the music again".

He told his fans that he had enough of the game and wanted to "come out of the deceit and false view of the world" to allow someone else to be "a star and the 'hottest' act".

"I watched in horror as @casspernyovest struggled to get the crowd going at bassline in 2013 (what we call the industry crowd) and I watched the same crowd stand up and go #crazy when he stood on the grand piano at the SAMAs 2015 and 'doc shebeleza' started playing," he wrote. "It reminded me of how I was once an underdog, and overcome it all".

But Cleo says he's learnt he lessons he needed to from his break and now he's ready to go and break some more musical records.

"IM THAT GUY THAT WAS NUMBER 1 and OUTSOLD ALL ARTISTS on downloads for 5yrs in a row (2008 -2012)
And now (after looking in the mirror) the journey to reclaim my spot begins. Why?... Because I've learnt my lesson. And most importantly.....because I'm #TheOne," he wrote.
